Underseat tray design - COMPLETED
« on: May 16, 2019, 04:26:28 PM »
I designed an underseat tray for 3D printing and just sent it off to Voodoo for printing. I have made a custom battery box to mount beneath it in the horizontal position with an AGM battery. If needed I plan to reinforce the battery box mounting using braces on the inside. I did not design this with the intention of it being an electronics tray, I intend to use this as a storage tray, perhaps even design a lid in the future. I wanted somewhere I could put my phone, wallet, papers, etc when riding without them being in my pockets. The print is going to be a prototype obviously, and I'll have to see if or what alterations are needed. I used a 1978 CB750K for my measurements. If anyone is interested in this for themselves I can provide the STL file or you can wait to see the results when I receive the tray. Voodoo is projecting an early June delivery, price was modest at ~55 including shipping (Shapeways wanted +$300  :o ). I attached a photo of the tray design as well, and I'm sure you'll notice there are no mounting holes. I prefer to drill those myself as I didn't want to get those measurements wrong. I'm open to any input or feedback as this is my first attempt at something like this. Wall thickness is 1/4" all around. This is also designed to work with the stock oil tank in place. Future design could have a relief cut for the oil tank and provide a deeper storage tray, perhaps even an integrated battery box? Who knows! Enjoy.

Nice design. I guess you updated this since sending me the pm. I'd go with the $55. I wouldn't be far apart by the time I consider my time, effort, and shipping to do it for you. Plus they probably have better quality printers than I have access to atm.

One thing I might suggest instead of drilling holes, adding in a slot that allows for some error in mounting bolt placement.  That way there will be printed walls around the bolt holes.  I'd also be sure to use some aluminum spacers in the mounting points to keep the PLA from compressing when you bolt it. I bought some from aluminumspacers.com

The 3D printed tray turned out to be a bust due to the printing method used (wasn't solid, interior was a lattice design) so I ordered a cognito moto shallow electronics tray. I utilized the stock battery box with small rubber spacers under the box mounts, a 1/8 neoprene mat over the top of the battery for added protection then the stock battery box rubber mounts as spacers to raise the box to the proper heigh. I did have to trim the walls of the cognito box down flush with the mounts as they were hitting the seat. I lined the cognito box with more neoprene and put in a usb charger that connects to the battery tender when not in use. Bonus, it also displays the battery voltage when connected. I may add a cargo net style cover for added insurance. This accomplished exactly what I wanted it to, a small secure area to stash pocket items (wallet, phone, keys, etc) while riding. I'd love to hear some feedback and ideas anyone has. Thanks!

As an added double bonus I was able to integrate a mounting point for my 82 Custom tank.
