Sandcast, whats it worth?
« on: January 27, 2007, 05:49:43 AM »
Hi everyone,

i may have stumbled across a sandcast in a friend of a friends garage.  It is clearly a very early CB750 (based on body work), I am currently waiting for the VINs.  Now, if this turns out to be a sandcast. what is this worth?  It has been sitting for 35 years (garage) and has under 2k miles.  If for some reason it turns out to be an early die cast, what would it be worth?

Putting both of those aside, what would you offer?  I know its tough to gauge without seeing, but it is a cared for bike that just needs to be cleaned up from sitting (carbs, ect).  I don't want to lowball, since this is sort of a friend, but at the same time, want to get a good deal.

Thanks!
Jim

Sure is. Try some eBay searches to get a feel. It's all pretty much condition, condition. However, even if it is a post-sandcast K0 in the condition you describe, it could be worth some $$. Again, an eBay search might give you a sense for the value, though bare in mind it could vary from time to time at auction, but it should give you a ballpark idea.

How much of a 'friend' is the friend? I would start the ball rolling by asking your friend what their expectations are for financial return. If he/she 'just wants it got rid of' then you've got lots of room to move on price. Do the research that Bob suggests then give the machine a thorough going over and subtract from that magic figure the cost of the tyres, battery, tune-up parts, fluids, chain/sprockets(?), carb clean, tank fluch and clean,  etc, etc, that it will inevitably need.

Personally I would never cheat a good friend.

This sounds really interesting, so please keep us in the loop. Post pics. And don't be disappointed if by the light of day it turns out to be a K8. (Ooops, sorry Eldar!)

If I didn't live in the UK, I would be sleeping on their doorstep to get first crack at that bike at that price.

Wow, that might be it.  I guess he is offering it for sale to other people too.

I should just grab my trailer and go over there with cash.

I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Thanks for the help!

From the Craigslist post...."another box marked Honda racing kit with an extra different set of pipes"!!!!!   Holy crap!

I hate to sound cynical.....but my first thought after seeing the "racing kit" reference and "it looks just like the motorcycle in the picture" is that the posting is a scam.  Next thought was the poster is a complete moron.

It'll be interesting to hear how it turns out.  Hopefully my third thought won't pan out (that the poster is a whack-job luring unsuspecting SOHC four owners into his lair....never to be seen again...)
