complete rewire and new ignition system
« on: February 22, 2019, 01:22:34 PM »
It's been a while since I've posted on here... adding kids to the stable does that I guess!!
So I want to completely rewire my bike (1978 750k with a '73 750k engine) that's the way I bought it. This was started in part because the rectifier has bit the dust, and I'd like to swap out to a dual reg/rec unit. While I was changing it, I started to notice the state of all my 40 year old wiring and connectors. which brings me to the decision to completely replace all my electrical including the ignition system.
I am still running the original breaker plate and would like to try out one of these fancy digital systems like a full Dyna system or Pamco or if there is anything else out there better.
Thanks in advance for the input and help.

There are a number of sources for complete wiring harnesses, which is the way I would go.

I have used reproduction harnesses on a few bikes and have had good results. On bikes that they are NLA I have replaced the connectors with Vintage Connections stuff which also worked well. Even if you do go the harness route a VC kit is a nice thing to have for the shop and to replace the connections the harness is connecting to, switches, lights, etc.

thank you all for the input, Calj, I see in your avatar an M-unit, just out of curiosity, when you installed it did you use an existing wire harness, a reproduction harness or did you do a custom? it seems to me that with the M-unit there will be lots of unused wires and relays taking up space an loom real estate.
