Peter Tork
« on: February 21, 2019, 02:37:05 PM »
:( Was sad to hear of his death today. I grew up watching him and The Monkees on their TV show back in the 60's. Another member Davey Jones past away a few years ago. They rivaled the Beatles in popularity for a time. Last Train To Clarksville and Im A Believer just a few of their many hits. Here is a rare video of Davey on the drums instead of Mickey and Peter singing.

They didn't do too bad for a band that was put together by Kellogg's for the TV show.

RIP Peter, and thanks for the memories. I used to watch that show every week and thought those guys were soooooooo cool!

On a side note David Bowie's real name was also David Jones. He took the professional name of Bowie out of respect to Davey Jones of the Monkees.

True they were put together for the Monkees tv show but all four were quite talented singers and musicians in their on right. Peter Tork was the best musicians and Mike Nesmith was quoted as saying Peter Tork was actually a better guitar player than he was. On their first 2 albums they were not allowed to play their own instruments but did on all others. Mike Nesmith even wrote many of the songs for the band. IMO they don't get the credit they deserve and should be in the Rock and Roll All of Fame. These guys were a big part of my childhood growing up in the mid to late 60's. Still enjoy their songs to this day. Thanks for all the great memories Mike, Mickey, Davey, and Peter.

Glad I saw Davey Jones in concert a year before he passed away. A true showman who was so appreciative of the crowd. The Monkees rocked some great songs back in the day! Great videos guys.

I read they weren't ever supposed to be a real band but they insisted and stuck together for the most part. I do have a soft spot for them, Boyce and Hart and all of their music.

In one of the news stories I heard about Peter Tork's passing it was reported that Stephen Stills auditioned for the Monkees.  When he didn't get the gig he recommended Peter Work who he'd known from the New England folk/coffee house scene.  I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the prospect of Stephen Stills as a Monkee.
