Rechroming a Fuel Cap
« on: February 23, 2019, 06:49:28 AM »
I have a cast fuel cap that I think needs to be stripped, polished, and rechromed.  See pics below.  Based on the attached pics, would I need to "prepare" this piece before taking it to a chrome shop?

No it is ready to go. If you are worried the process may coat the threads you can always put a screw in there, however, I never had an issue with it.

I have one or two to go also, my chrome shop has a minimum so taking a few parts is cheaper per item than one.  I bought a replacement but it's stamped steel not cast like the older ones.  While it was apart I soaked the parts in Vinegar to get the rust off.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

I’m impressed you guys can even consider rechroming. A few weeks ago, I found a pair of the correct turn signal stems for my Benelli SEI. won them on EBay. They are about the size of my thumb, plus a small nut each. Local chrome shops (Canada) quoted my cdn$200 + Postage! The Honda ones ar looking just fine!

Thank you for your feedback.  The reason I raised this question is that I took a gauge backing plate to this particular chrome shop and it had a bit of pitting around the outer scalloped rim.  The shop chromed right over it, so I wasn't sure if they overlooked it, or felt it was up to me to remove it.

And yes, it is an extra cost.  But the rest of this bike has been restored, with all the body parts repainted correctly.  I'm gambling that the extra expense will be worth it in the long run.  I like my toys looking shiny and new, just as I did As a kid.  So I guess I'm still a kid.
