Sprokets and ratio
« on: June 07, 2005, 01:17:47 AM »
I'm thinking of buying a new chain and sprokets and have a question that noone I've spoken to have an answer to. Perhaps you guys know.

If I keep the same ratio e.g. 2,00 (easier to count with) does it make any difference if I use 16/32, 17/34 or 18/36? Does the sizes on the sprockets matter at all if the ratio is the same? I was thinking that maybe it does some difference comparing the sprocket size and the wheel size? And if so, what is the difference between smaller vs bigger?

Well, to keep with the example you used, the 16/32 will wear out faster than the 18/36 combination.
Maybe there are other side effects in chain movement/stressing I can't say. Propably relevant for racing only.
