I wish we had bolt on brake upgrade options
« on: February 25, 2019, 03:36:31 AM »
Bikes such as the Yamaha XS and SR series have a few options for using upgraded calipers (Brembo, FZR, etc.) on the stock forks by using a bolt on bracket.
Rotors can also be found from later model bikes that are modern(ish) drilled, light weight, floating style rotors. These can also be bolted right on to the stock wheel, sometimes requiring a small spacer, depending on what the donor rotor is.

Here's an example on my SR500.

I know about the Goldwing forks, but that's a whole front end swap and they're a little long for the 500/550. I know about the R6 conversion but, again, a whole front end swap.

Has anyone come up with anything that uses the STOCK 500/550/750 forks, and wheel? That floating caliper arrangement complicates things a little bit.
Does anyone have any ideas of how we could do something similar to the Yamaha upgrades? Used calipers and rotors can be found cheap. A water jetted bracket or two and, bam, upgraded braking.

750 k3-k6 caliper and rotor will fit on 550 k0-k2. Still only a single disc, but will bolt on
to any 550 with the "341" fork lowers, and you can do the dual disc conversion like on
the 750 as well, but it maybe a little heavy.

But isn't that just a bigger version of the same floating caliper arrangement that's on the 550? (Sorry, I'm not up to snuff on the 750 terminology and changes)

Beringer makes a bolt-on kit. Big money, high quality. But quality and convenience cost.

Look at 77 and 78 750 f forks  easy to convert probably within an inch of 550 length.
They will fit in your trees and take a ribbed disc hub like a 500 uses, Ducati and Yamaha floaters fit the bolt pattern..

I am following this thread with interest.  By the way the biggest improvement would be in disc material.  The old work hardened stainless disc is a bit average compared to the latest stuff.

The best bolt-on upgrade is the F2/F3 forks Frank mentioned, paired with the '82 up twin piston calipers. The 550 rotors will need to be thinned.
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,89771.0.html
Also, the late F forks have caliper mounts that are more adaptable for different caliper/rotor combos. I'm now running a single 320mm Ducati rotor with a single Honda 32mm twin piston caliper, but this was not a bolt-on. ;)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

To be honest, if you were careful , you could probably make the  adaptors in a medium size  drill press, if you have transfer punches , a vise and a few endmills.

I posted a few more pics on Budmans thread in projects, including a big rotor and a 6 piston caliper.
