2 stroke premix for rust control?
« on: February 27, 2019, 03:23:05 AM »
Anyone added premix oil to gas tank to coat the insides and keep oem mufflers from rusting?

If so, how much and how often?

Don't recall ever seeing any 2 stroke mufflers rust out.

Can't be real good for carbon build-up, though.....

Or maybe just Seafoam?.....it seems somewhat oily.....just rambling here

I know the best answer is ride hard and ride long but that isn't always practical.

After finding a set of oem mufflers after looking for 25 years, I have now become too paranoid to use them!

A capful of marvel mystery oil should do the trick, but 2 stroke oil should work as well.

I've used the 2 stroke oil in the gas for winter storage and store the tank indoors,
along with the exhaust indoors as well. While the pipes are off for the winter, I give
them a thorough cleaning with wd40 to remove the baked on chain lube, then hang them up in my basement. My 341s have been in service since 2003.

The 2 stroke oil doesn't need to get to the muffler through the engine.
Once or twice a year, after a good ride and the mufflers are hot and dry.  I squirt some oil in the end of the muffler.

For me I don't leave gas in the tank for winter storage.  All the gas is drained.  1/4 quart of 2 stroke oil in the tank and swished around.  Tank comes off for this.  In the spring i get as much oil out of the tank as is easy.  Then fill the tank with gas.  I suspect I am close to 100 :1

I've use 2stroke oil in small engine winter storage for years. I've always owned 2 stroke dirt bikes and never experienced the carburetor storage problems with them as compared to the small 4 stroke engines.

With the  newer 2cycle oil offering like the Stihl Gray bottles of oil. The Stabilizer has already been added. My son and I never purchase the orange Stihl oil anymore, prevents having to dump everything prior to storage.

Not sure about the bennifits of 2 cycle oil in 4cycle exhaust. I don't think our Honda 2cycle CR's exhausts operate at the same temps as the 4 cycles do. Ridden very hard, not me, my son, they never burn the factory paint off.  Additionally the original expansion chambers tend to be pretty well made. Generally, heavier material than the aftermarket chrome expansion chambers.

I use synthetic 2 stroke oil in my bikes when they are going to sit a while, about an oz per tank full. I use Amzoil when I can find it at the local farm store. My gl1000 Goldwing gets some too. Something with stabilizer already in it can't hurt. I avoid gasohol when I can but the stations that sell it don't have any additives to keep fuel injectors and carbs clean.

Hadn't really thought about the tank. I've not had a problem with them as I try and keep fresh gas and/or stabilizer in them at all times.
Also try to ride as much as possible in winter, so removal is not practical for me.
May shoot a little in the outlet and see if it makes it to the drain holes, but I'm really wanting to get a total inside coating if practical.
Probably going to try adding some to the tank and see what happens, 100/1 would be roughly 6oz/tank. Sounds like a lot, but still way less than a 2 stroke?
Thanks for the replies

I use 4 ozs of syn 2 stroke, ethanol free gas, and stabil in 5 gallon jugs to fill all my old bikes...all the time, year round. I've done this now for at least 20 years. Keeps petcocks, slides, tanks etc. all in good shape.

X2 on keeping the petcocks working nice and smooth.
