Can you remove the float bowl drain tube?
« on: March 04, 2019, 06:21:09 PM »
One of the drain tubes on one of my float bowls is bent. The tube comes out of the bowl and sharply bends about 45* like someone dropped the whole rack on that tube or something. I have a spare bowl, I'm wondering if I can yank the tube out and replace it? Much like how you can yank the brass fittings out of a petcock if the fuel lines are too stiff.

If it's a nipple only, it was probably pressed in and will probably pull out OK. If it is actually the bottom of the overflow tube... probably not so easy. On bowls where the drain screw opens flow to the overflow, it is probably a separate nipple. On bowls where fuel dribbles out around the drain screw, it could be one piece with the overflow tube.
Try it and let us know.

I think it's cast in, maybe has a bulge..
I would read up on annealing brass , and try heating it  before tweaking.  May need a rod inside to A keep it round, and B give leverage to straighten it.
Is it 400 four ? Someone may have a spare.

Ok, verdict is in. I tried bending it back to straight as first resort and it broke clean off. Lol! However the stock left in the bow looks pressed in and it.. but like it's never coming out. I have spares but its complicated. I can type more when I'm sober in the morning!

That can happen even when you are sober!

Maybe try drilling it out?

So The set of carbs with the now broken drain tube has polished bowls. But they are a little beat up. I also have a spare set of bowls, not polished. However I sold one bowl to a member here so I only have three of them... I prefer the non polished look so I guess my plan now is to "un polish" one of the polished bowls.

Is it bent right at the bowl? If you could snip it off, leaving enough to get a hose on, it will not change how it works......

I was bent right at the bowl, and then when it snapped off it snapped flush so there is nothing left.

Drill it out and loctite or JB Weld a new tube in place.

I appreciate the advice. I think I'm going to do as I said above, I don't really want to use the polished bowls in their current state, anyways.

Sorry, the polished bowls are all chewed up on the sides from someone using the screwdriver method to unstick their floats. I don't even think it's possible to sand deep enough to remove the gouges. And if I did I would have to repolish.

Ethanol in the fuel would make short work of either of those methods to re-attach.

A press or interference fit, will laugh at ethanol..

I got the bowls all shined up (or down) to match each other. I have two with stuck drain screws. My first thought is left handed drill bit. But I haven't used that on brass before.

Heat will often get those screws loose.
