honda 150 dream
« on: March 06, 2019, 03:28:05 PM »
Does anyone know how the topend oil returns to the case on a 64 150cc benly? I see how it feeds but the only place i see for it to come back is the cutaway at the top of the cam sprocket. reason im asking is i've been fighting a right cylinder oil burning issue. I replaced rings, bores and pistons looked good, ring end gaps are at .011 but last time i took it down there was a lot of oil on the head gasket.I als0 put a different head on it thinking i had a bad guide. this is only on the right cylinder. So much oil is going through it that it drips out the pipe and the plug is soaked with oil. Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like you are missing the oil seal which fits over the right rear head stud and sits inside the head gasket.
That or it is not seating properly.

I used a new 0-ring and the last time i took it down i used a little permatex #1 around it because when i was checking to see if it had a crack between cylinder wall and that stud hole after plugging the bottom of the stud hole and filling with gas some was seeping up around the top of the hole. This ain't my first rodeo,i'v been rebuilding motorcycle engines for 40 years, all different kinds and i;ve never had one act like this. Thinking now the top of the cylinder may be warped. This bike was seriously abused in the last leg of its life so anything is possible i guess. Its stuff like this that keeps me up at night.

Good luck then mate but you wouldn't be the only one who has missed out that little green O ring oil seal.

I still don't know how the top end oil returns to the case.Any of you old honda gurus know?? Only place i see is at the top of the cam sprocket, but that would mean the top would have to almost fill before it would spill over. That don't seem right.

when i put the new rings in they were nos,but no instructions.i don't remember seeing a bevel anywhere on the rings.did all rings for this motor have a bevel on the second ring? I need help,i've already had it apart 3 times.don't want to do it again unless i have a plan. The smoking almost stops when it warms up good.Still a little when reved hard.

Surplus oil returns down the front of the cam chain tunnel.
Unless you are using after market rings (not genuine Honda parts) there should be bevels on the two compression rings of each piston.
The top ring has the bevel on the inside top and the second has it on the outside top.
The top ring should be chrome plated and be marked to show which is the top side with some letters. (TP or KR STD)
Do I take it you are doing these builds without the aid of a workshop manual as it is all explained in the Honda manual.

Thanks for the reply. No manual, and the rings came in a honda box.My eyes ain't what they used to be so i may have missed the bevel.

I'll see if I can get my mate to take a picture from my workshop manual but it might be next week before I see him, possibly the week after.
From memory, they are hard to see and you might need a good strong magnifying glass to see them if your eyes are anything like mine. haha.
