Did y'all see that CB750 F1 on Ebay? Sold for almost £4000.  It was a bit of a rarity in that it only had 1600 miles on the clock, but even so, I was expecting it to go for around £2500 (£3000 tops!!!).

You never know with eBay do you.

All it needs is more than one bidder who really wants it.

Even with 1600 miles and one owner, it's still only worth £2.5k in my opinion (he'll find out if he ever tries to sell it)

No kidding... I've seen many a garage queen collectable the owner could not drive for fear of depreciation. Seemed pointless to have the thing. Oh well to each his own, I guess.

one thing that i think we are overlooking is the fact that... worth aside, some people have no problem whatsoever plunking down 8 grand.  think of the cost of cars... 8 grand is a drop in the bucket. 
one of my employers has 3 houses, 4 saabs, 2 land rovers, a porsche, and yada yada yada... i guarantee he paid 3 times that for everything i just listed (more in most instances)  and, he doesn't really care how much it is, just whether he wants it or not.  oh, and he drives the piss out of everything... except for the houses

Had that one on my eBay watch list, with 4 hours to go it was about £2500 and I thought that was it, I was amazed when I saw the final price, Looked good on the photos but would have liked to see it in the flesh to see how good it was.

Its amazing the things that happen on ebay, that same bike listed a few months ago might have gone for half that. But, throw in a couple of buyers with big pockets and a "rare" or hard to find item and it just gets crazy  . I know I've given up on more than a few auctions when the price exceeded what the item was actually worth...

My 750F1 was a similar deal.  A basement queen for most of its life and then put on eBay.  600-odd original miles on the clock.  My dad snatched it for $5600, then sold it to me.

Most of the value is in the low-miles, but I am not of the mindset to buy a low-mile vehicle and then not drive it.  Basically you have a REALLY expensive model at that point.  I'm gonna ride the ever-loving crap out of this thing.

Think about what a new bike costs.  I basically am getting a new bike, that I would argue is more over-engineered and over-built than most modern machines, and at a fraction of the cost.  It does need a few piddly things, but it's stuff I can do over a weekend.

When I get home, I need to do the 600-mile service.  How cool is that, that I can say that about a 31-year old machine?

When I look at those spindly fork tubes, rubbish brakes and rear suspension - and then compare to my modern bike (VFR), I can't agree with that!

I must admit that I kinda agree with Steve. Even pushing the CB750 around the garage is a major chore compared to my modern bikes of late. The bike feels big and heavy. And on the road, the brakes and suspension are hilarious when compared to modern bikes.

Having said that, the old Honda build quality pi$$es all over modern Honda bikes - including the new CBF1000 i bought.

One old mechanic here had a '69 750Four that he rode over 100,000 miles.  That's my goal with mine.

What I mean is that parts are bigger and tougher than they have to be.  Modern bikes use computer-desgined parts that are engineered to be JUST big enough and strong enough for their intended job.  For example, look at the brake caliper and brackets off a modern bike and look at the front brake assembly from a SOHC Four.  That swinging caliper arm and the caliper themselves are so meaty and so massive, way out of proportion to their purpose.  The frames are welded steel and there is no "weird-tanium" to be found anywhere.

I sort of had that dilemma, my bike only had 2700 miles on it when I got it in 1999. Oops... it now has 10500 or so, but now it has 4 nice looking pipes, then it had 2 ugly agricultural pipes. I wonder what it's worth now???
