What do I have??
« on: March 14, 2019, 06:31:17 PM »
So I got this CB500 Four from the original owner who bought it new from the dealer when he was stationed in Germany in 1975.  It was sent stae side when he was sent home.  Speedo is in KMs and the metal VIN plate and owners manual are in German.  HOWEVER.....The helmet holder stickers and the battery hose and cable routing stickers re in English.

The year thats is stamped on the VIN plate just say 19. Not 1973, 74, or75...just 19.

So, my question is the parts fiches we get only show the 500 four up to 1973....not as far as 75. It needs a few items such as new fork gators but he told me he ordered some for the 73 but they wouldnt fit on this bike....
I was told that "maybe" the euro markets got them longer than the US did. Can anyone shed insight on how long the Euro market got 500 fours??  And where can i find things like gators for this bike???

EDIT.   But if the VIN poiints at a 72, then why is it candy orange as in a 73 paint scheme??   This bike confuses me.

The UK/Europe got the 500 till 77 then came the 550K3 BUT it stayed as the K1 500 with smaller clocks. The fork gaiters should have fit as long as they were real Honda not aftermarket and were same as 750.

No need to. The kind of info you're looking for, is not in the fiches, as displayed by CMSNL. Neither do you find info there concerning colour codes, carb numbers, etc. Engine- and framenumbers are listed in the first few pages of the CB500 Parts Lists. Go here: http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb500 . Yours is either a CB500 or CB500K1. Compare the numbers with those in the lists and you will have the area code. Indicators tell me it's a 'Germany type'.

Must be the same brand as I have, although I find mine slightly more elegant.

Now only second hand, I'm afraid. Allow me a little anecdote. Bought my bike in 1980. That summer we were to go on a six weeks tour to France, Italy and Greece and I needed a rack. There was a motorstore two blocks away. Behind the counter against the wall hang that rack with its pricetag, but the owner would not let me have it, unless I also bought the cases. But I didn't want the cases. A friend had just donated me leather bags in a quality only made behind the Iron Curtain which at the time was still in place. Almost 40 years later, I still use them, btw. Went to other stores, but I didn't like the racks they had. They would ruin the looks of my bike. The next day I walked past the first store and through the window I saw that now the owner's daughter was behind the counter and I guessed the boss was in the workshop. She, very young, did not have the commercial instinct her father had and I bought that rack real quick and left the shop like greased lightning. Which reminds me: years ago I've promised to show how to pack a bike (after I had seen some pics here that had horrified me). Next spring I'll fulfill that promise and make some pics.

Jakec..no boxes. But if someone has pics of the ones that were for this rack I sure would like to see them!!

And guys, since the engines out of the frame for repaint I am thinking redo valve stem seals etc etc.   What full engine gasket kit should I buy???  Little back story here. The bike sat in his garage since 1980 unmoved so thus i think doing some preventative repairs are in order.

Veshra  gasket kit ordered per the suggestion. Broke down the front caliper nd master cylinder and everythings nice and clean.  No pits  on the piston or master bore.  New lines will be made at our local brake line maker shop.  Caliper and master cylinder are painted with black caliper paint. Headlight bucket and chain guard freshly painted.

Frame repainted and engine degreasedand repainted as well. Pics will follow at some point.

So I got around to replacing valve stem seals and lapping the valves before installing engine back in frame.  Went through the clutch as well. Polished all the covers also. Hopefully folks are clicking on the links in my posts to see the pictures.  If clicking a link isnt working then let me know.  Thanks.
