early ride this year
« on: March 15, 2019, 05:49:05 PM »
Here in upstate NY I almost always wait to ride after it is definitely spring. The way we know that it is really really spring is when the highway crews have been busy sweeping, shoveling and spraying the winters leftover sand off the road surface. Then and only then is when I would take a machine out for the first ride of the season.
But this year  my other riding friends informed me  just this week that their bikes are for sale. When asked " what are you going to get now? , the answer was nothing, giving it up , can't ride anymore....blood pressure giving one guy wall eyes or crossed eyes or something , the other guy says he can't keep his balance, these guys are in their late 50's. WTF ! Is this common?  Does this happen to everyone? WTF, I turned 60 in January and have no intentions of giving up like that. Should have seen these guys faces when they told me this crap, it was horrifying , I thought they might start crying  and the more I thought about it, I feared that I may start crying too. My plan has always been to ride across country when I know the end is near, and especially if I think  that I can't make the journey... just means I'm a little late starting out.   Anyways, I was shocked to hear what these guys had said , even more shocked that they didn't plan a final ride. What's the real story here ? Are we supposed to give this up, for what?
So we can watch TV in our new "favorite chair? Are we supposed to take comfort in "saving" ourselves waiting for a monumental moment with our grand kids or something, like we're supposed to pass down the secret of happiness to them? Like they might listen, and it'll change there life or some horse crap like that? Let me get this straight, this is the day you realize that you may be in danger riding a cycle. You still got to go to work every day where you can be  a fatality there too. You haven't treated the body as a temple...ever , and may be under the illusion that 75 is the new 50 and life can be grand until 90,  then there will be certain disappointments that can be addressed with naps, high fiber diet and daily pill box that is only half the size of Aunt Ethel's suitcase.
Well I turned 60 this year, and I'm riding, not only that , but it's March 15th and  for the first time in many years of being careful for my family . waiting for the safest moment to start the riding season, I took off  a half day from work and fired up the 750 and went riding...on sandy roads....and I rode fast... and never looked to see how much fuel was in the tank....and road until I felt I had enough for the first ride this season ....the season that started a full 2 months ahead of any other year  for me ...and it felt fantastic!!  My season started on March 15th !!!
I'll miss the chances of riding with the other two guys but that's their choice , and No,  I'm not buying their fargin Harleys. While the are at home growing old remembering their riding days, I want to be out there doing it. I think a man has got to guage and control the direction his life with defined goals and activities so that  the time left is not wasted. I need to get a grip... but.... MY RIDING SEASON STARTED IN MARCH THIS YEAR !!!
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Great post love it!! You hit the nail on the proverbial thread. While I am not 60 I can relate to the Spring ride as I am in Boston. I used to ride all Winter until the salt ate away at the VStrom but now I wait until the salt is gone. I used to ride the CB750 all winter until i saw the fork boots cracking in the 15F cold. Maybe in one more week ;). Ride and ride like its giving you life! Thanks for sharing!
cheers

I was on the road in March, the last 2 years and should be next week,
We still had snow this week.
 I was 62 last year.
Rode to Colrado 2 years ago , 1350 miles
Bonneville last year, 900 miles.. got there in 26 or 27 hrs.
Slept on the side of the road a few nights, or rest areas.. and it felt Damn good, I must say..

And I met a lot of people from this forum on those rides.. the icing on the cake..

Just do it, cuz one day you cant, .....And I don't want to be the guy wishing I had gone a few more times.
Don't get to travel as often as I liked but got to get one good ride every year at least..

When I turn 70, I may use electric start.. hopefully not..

scunny, I'm a big fan of buying a bike as a present for myself, it almost always involves a rebuild though , and generally isn't any less cost than a purchase of a running machine.
I find it difficult to choose  machines other than vintage Hondas, but I went to a bike show a couple of years back and for some reason was interested in the Triumphs. Very nice machines I thought , but again ,  it 's a vintage design. Then I saw a recent Yamaha factory built Cafe racer , 650  maybe,....realized  there seems to be a vintage theme that has my interest.
The new bikes scare me, they look uncomfortable and expensive ...not keen on computers in machines, can't fix ,only replace.
I bought a 2001 honda 750, told the owner I that I didn't want his bike, had no use for it, too new for me. Would have never looked for a machine like that and I would have missed out on a light weight ,comfortable ride. Cruises nicely, not big HP but has no problems getting over the speed limit . Looks cruiser enough that Harley riders don't break my stones about it being Japanese. Factory seat isn't any good, ass buster , delivers lower back pain in less than 35 miles. Aftermarket seat makes that machine a different bike.
Had an idea that the wing might be interesting . 750 lbs  machine vs 165lbs rider . I think the math is off for a light weight rider.... There's no pushing one of those home either. The one in the barn just wares me out moving it around the shop,  have been threatening to rebuild it but can't think of a compelling reason to do it. Everyone says that they are fantastic  for long rides, I changed the bars, lost the boxes and the ever so stylish Vetter wind-sceen to make it comfortable for my size,  didn't want to climb all over the boxes to get on the seat and then have them be in the way all the time. It looks allot better now, but I can't verify that it is  fantastic for any ride.
You're thinking street triple, is that a 2 stroke kind of triple or a 4 stroke kind? I never looked into triples before. I can see where a 2 stroke would be lighter weight with twice as much fire in the chamber than the 4 stroke model , but I can see where a 4 stroke model would be more like riding the cb650...not that there is anything wrong with the 650, one of my favorite rides, have upgraded 500/550s with 650 suspensions a few times . But the smell of a 2 stroke reminds me of younger days for sure, the ting ting tingy sound when you let off the throttle , that would be a crazy sound times 3.  Powerband hmmm , what would that be like? Either the front end is coming up or the wheel is spinning or at least able to . I can see why you might be thinking of something like that.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Andy , Hopin spring comes your way soon. I know some places in the world have longer winters than we do ,can you imagine having to wait longer for a shorter season? That is the only thing that makes our wait sound reasonable.

754 Early seasons and long rides sounds like that was worth the wait. Kickstarts, I love kickstarts! Have you noticed that when only a couple of people see you up on the peg just before you drop your weight their eyes get wide in anticipation of the engine firing.... on the flip side,if you left the kill switch in the off position on the first kick with no fire, three times as many people get interested in the kickstarting procedure and only half of them will know what you are doing.  If it takes three  you got a crowd.   But you can't get away with 4 kicks , then you must be an idiot and don't know what you're doing.   That's the only thing that I miss on the 650 as opposed to the 550s , I'll kick them every chance I get.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

I just turned 60 in February so guess we are in the same boat !  I've had a motorcycle of some kind or another since I was 12 years old so don't see myself going without one now. Nothing like the feeling of getting out for a nice ride and just relaxing and enjoying yourself.  Good therapy.  Eric in Michigan

I hear your pain fellas. I turned 65 last year and just retired the end of January. I have been riding since 1969 and also can't see myself without a bike. I suppose someday I will thin the herd, but for now I am looking forward to not punching a clock and riding whenever I want with no restrictions. Agree with Eric it is just so relaxing and fun!

I will turn 65 in June, have been “retired” since I was 51. Been riding since I was 16. Because of type of work I did, I have knee replacement, hip replacement, back fusions, total neck fusions, and a 5” plate in my ankle. Still riding. Will until I can’t.

Three winters ago they started using salt on the roads in southern Idaho along with mag chloride as a pre-treatment and that is what stopped me riding in the winter.  They will put mag chloride down even if there is a 10% chance of snow in the forecast.  So what formerly would have been a dry road is now slick with a corrosive chemical.  They put down so much salt that the roads look like they were hit with a sack of flour once they dry off.  I won't run my bikes in that crap, I don't like driving my cars on it.  But there is no argument winter accidents have plummeted here and the highway departments are saving money by not having to continually sweep up sand and clean it out of culverts.  Not to mention better air quality from less particulate matter in the air from pulverized sand.

We've had rain and the salt is washed away. I finally got my problem child 78 gl fixed and have been out 4 times already. At 62 I rode 965 miles to Sturgis on a recently repaired gl and did it again on a different bike at 64.
My brother taught me to ride and is 79, I've seen him go down several times in the last few years with only one injury, not too severe but required long term wound treatment. He bought a sidecar bike but isn't a fan of it, now he's thinking of a 4 wheel gl1100. I miss riding with him but would prefer not to see a bike put him in long term care. And yup, it sucks.

Around here, some of the road crews use #9 limestone as abrasives for additional TRACTION on snow and ice! It lays there after the storm until traffic finally kicks it off, which can be even worse for your bike than salt!

I used to ride year around regardless of the temps, but find myself enjoying the cold less and less.

At 72, I'm am looking for a new bike though.

My hero was a 90 year old guy who used to ride in to our dealership on a 150cc scooter! He rode Harley messenger duty in WW2, and had the pictures to prove it. The last time I saw him, he pulled out of our lot onto the 4-lane and jumped into the passing lane WOT! Not long after that he was gone.
