1977 CB550k compatible tachometer gears
« on: June 12, 2019, 11:51:52 AM »
Hi, so recently got a 1977 cb550k that i am restoring and they had blocked off the tachometer port with rtv and took the gear out. So i went to look online for a new gear there were none to be found. I'm wondering if there are tachometer gear/shafts from any other years and bikes that would work? Some that look the same, but not sure if they would work:

Thanks in advanced!

Any 500 or 550 four will fit nothing else

I only asked because the 500t had the same looking shaft, but i figured out it was not. I guess I will not be able to use the tachometer with the cable, because that gear for the 500 and 550 four is not available anywhere.

I found two places overseas who say they have it in stock. You may want to contact them to confirm. The price on the German site is much, much more reasonable.

You could always try to find a used CB500/550 head and swipe it from there.

Thanks for finding this for me I somehow didn't see this website. I was able to contact the German company and got them to ship one internationally for around 44 USD (That's the item price included).   ;D

kakon, make sure that PO has not fitted 650 cam to yours. 550 gear will not fit.

How can I tell if it's a cb650 cam? Now that I think about it could be a reason for them to take old gear out.

I am pretty sure it is a 550 cam because it has a normal gear and not a HyVo chain one. I will have to check the cam markings when I get home.

So the cam says r10 and has a F mark on it and a H mark on the back. Which cam is it?

Marks maen nothing and gear will fit either cam, you will have to measure it and compare to specs.

I dont have any fancy measuring tools, but with calipers, the lobes are 1.420 in, which is closer to the 650 cam at 1.4in compared to the 550 cam at 1.38. It also came with the oringal tachometer, but the gear and cable were gone, so having the 650 cam also explains that. What are benefits to the 650 cam? And I will also need both the 650 gear and speedo?

After remeasuring again it was at 1.370 in, which would make it a 550, I think it wasn't zeroed properly. I know calipers are not the most accurate tool.
