CB550 Cafe Racer Reboot
« on: March 19, 2019, 02:13:46 PM »
I just finished this '78 CB550, which I had purchased a few months ago in non-running cafe racer form.  It had upright bars, stock footpegs, its original gauges and 7" headlight, and a rats' nest of wiring and electrical tape.  The forks, carbs and intake o-rings were leaky, and the exhaust copper gaskets were missing,

I had to completely rewire the bike and rebuild the forks, brakes, carbs and intake manifolds.  Since it had no switches, horn or turn signals, I removed the starter, hid a Ballistic 4-cell battery in the starter space, and built it as a minimalist traditional cafe bike.  The Carpy's exhaust is very lightweight.

I added rearsets (Cognito brackets and Slipstream pegs, levers and linkage), clubman bars, a mini speedometer, and 4.5" headlight.  The carb and intake parts came from 4into1.com.

I also laced up an 18" front wheel and used Kenda Challenger tires front and rear.

Runs nice and strong, handles well and feels very light.  It'll be for sale in a few weeks,.

Looks good. What’s going on with the rear tank mount?
