Hello:
recent discussion about these washers, thicker than standard with flat spot. Necessary to use or you'll break the clamp.

The flat spot is to allow the fork tube to pass by:

These are not available from Honda anymore I think. AS an alternative, the cylinder head nut washer is slightly thicker.
.093 vs .09. You can thin one by rubbing it (hard) against a file or emory paper:

and get it down:


Then grind the flat in with your favorite grinder.

The OD is larger than the original so it will stick out some. If it bothers you, you'll have to trim it down with a Dremel, but at least your bridge won't crack.

Nice tip! What year did they stop using these? My '77 F2's and my K8 don't have them, and i've had my forks off and on several times with no problem.

Don't know for sure, guessing 75/76?

Any idea on the full outside diameter of those washers? Too big and they will stick out of the  top bridge, too small and they wont do the proper job.

I don't think too small OD is a problem. Too thin is. I'll measure the true OD this weekend.

I ended up doing just like your instructions said and everything worked out alright. I just some washers that I knew would fit inside the area without sticking out too much. Got everything tightened down and it seems to be holding. I want to start this stinkin thing. So much work left to do!

The stock OD is .63". The cylinder head washer OD is .7". It does stick out, but your bridge won't crack.

I took my digital calipers to Lowes and walked around until I found something called a spacer nut.

It was 0.096" thick so it didn't require much file work to get it down to 0.09.

The outer shape is hexagonal and the internal dia is slightly bigger than stock but it works.

Would you please confirm the part number of the "cylinder head nut washer" you referenced?  I believe it is part number 90485-035-000.

That would be cool! Problem is a lot of people need these but don't know it...yet...until they break their Unicorn top.

I see a lot of Unicorn tops on eBay that don't have spacers with them. That's  a disaster waiting on someone to happen.

I was discussing split washers on the Facebook 750Four site and referenced this topic for making the washers.  One contributor there Andrew Koppenhaver offered the following information about which 750s used these washers:
it's easier to remember which ones don't need them.  K7/K8, and F2/F3 are the only ones that don't require the D washers. All others (the early unicorn type, dashboard type, early F type) require the D washers. That change happened sometime in 76, when they started producing the late model bikes.

but please note also that from my research on CMSL.COM, it appears the same part number 53235300000 (so same size) washers were used on 500, 550 & 750 up to 75 and in some cases part way through 76.  You have to search to find the frame or VIN number to identify the cut-off.  For the 750F, I saw that information on a post here on SOHC4.

Some of the 550s don't use them. I had some of these a while ago as NOS, around 10 I think. They sold really quickly. I found out that the 500 four used them but the 550F and 550K3 didn't. The thing to spot is what size the pinch bolt is, if the head is 12mm with the shaft at 8mm then it needs them. If the pinch bolt has a 10mm head with a 7mm shaft then it doesn't use them.

Want to make sure before i make them and try to clamp down on them.

They may be the same washer?  [I dont know 350's]

Check the part number of each to determine.

PS. Member Johnie has these for sale for a reasonable price.
