CB 750 Street tracker
« on: March 20, 2019, 03:19:15 PM »
Hi Guys, I have a `71 Honda 750 that has 23000 miles on it. I bought it in 1981. 2 previous owners spoke with me and there was no work done , just maintenance. They did not ride it much. I did, 3 years daily driver (no car). Life got busy and it sat for 3 years. Got it running with 2 kicks. Did a restoration at this time. Rode for 3+ years. The bike got knocked over hard and broke mirrors, lights , bars , paint etc.. I got pissed and put a running bike in the barn for nearly 30 years. It is not bad considering I dont have the desire to go stock again. So after much searching , I have decided to go with something different. The inspiration for this build is the picture in this post. Flat track style. The company sells the seat, pan , oil bag, tank , fork covers. They also sell number plate with headlights. Things I need to source out. The gas tank is not street legal. So my questions are Custom Tank? Custom Exhaust? change swing arm, Dresda? 19" wheels, hubs, tires? Forks Ceriani? Grimea caliper , Marzocchi shocks? Bars and controls, sprocket and big rear disc? Frame mod or is it stock? Front brakes? Any help sourcing things would be helpful. Look for some street advice with the history of this bike. If it runs good still, would you clean it and bolt it back in? Also , Interested in Gorden Frame Mod. Future in mind. Any & all help appreciated, Thanks

I like the pic and the look, but, if you're going to do a street tracker Honda IMO, (and I know this is blasphemy on this site) do it right and do the V Twin.
I like poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking at dead things with a stick.

not blasphemy at all, in fact I agree.  Cb750's get upset just being near dirt.

lol...looks like it has already been upset

Still can't resist ripping a trail on my 750 every once in a while.  Most of the ripping is coming from my pant leg caught in a thorn bush.

This Suzuki Rm tank can be modded and have a look similar to Champion, and hold I think at least 2 gallons, important for the street. I developed a wordless frame kit, it is available thru Scottly on here .....Arizona.
I went thru a lot of preliminary work thinking thru a 750 tracker but was going to use a custom chopper type frame.
I am now thinking of  maybe doing a xs 650 tracker.
If you are interested in a Champion type tail section, out of aluminum, I might be able to help. L duo you have access to tig welding? I am up north but aluminum stuff is cheap to ship..
No should have a Champion style hoop that you can add to your frame, most of the tracker stuff won't fit our frames, and may not be strong enough for day to day use..
Also tried the storz XR 750 tank, does not work that nice with 750, the xs 650 will get it

Ceriani 35mm, are pricey, Betor 35 mm are far easier to source and can be 1/3 the price.
Get them with fender mounts if you want front brake, and or a brace.
I been buying up knock off flattrack wheels, they are out there  may have a bit of issues with bolts staying tight, they are pretty light and look right. 18s tend to go for less , but hard to get flattrack tires for them.. dual purpose or AdV type tire are I think better street choice..

You're asking people to design the bike for you or to tell you what you should buy?

Not sure what the issue with the tank is unless NJ specifically states that glass tanks are no good. Plenty of guys run them on the street, just make sure you pay to have Airtech coat the inside.

If I am building it here is what I would do (I don't do budget builds so get ready):
-Inspiration is the RS750 for paint and colors of pieces
- GPS Racing quick change hubs front and rear, SS spokes and Sun non-dimpled rims, proper 19" dirt track tires, small disc out back, single 330mm up front with AP calipers
- 35mm ceriani forks and use the guards Airtech makes, Race Tech internals
- All the tracker parts from Airtech
- 836 engine with ported head, and all the other internal goodies
- Custom triple trees to make it all work
- Box section swingarm, ring up CMR for that
- Small GPS speedo/tach combo that is basically hidden at a glance, maybe a Motogadget Motoscope or simiar, full Motogadget wiring
- Smallest legal turn signals that will pass in your state

Be a really fun build but to do it right gets past $10K pretty quick.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

I agree, thats why i made a donation today.  I have learned an enormous amount.  So much in fact, I have restored multiple cb750 engines, and I plan on doing my first cb550 this year.

Great site, great people.  Love it.  Keep it going!

Another classic option:

http://www.storzperf.com/catalog/page31.html
Willy I showed a pic of the Storz XR tank. Nice but it has a narrow tunnel , to even fit on an XS 650 I have to move most of the under tank stuff.. and new they are like 980.00..

I don't mind helping the new guys as long as they are receptive, we had a few that got combative and ignorant.. not this guy. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to make a nice tracker out of a 754, and shelved it for nowm don't mind passing some of it along.
One thing not yet mentioned , I think they need a high pipe, but they are not a simple thing to make and have it look right.
