vintage watches
« on: March 23, 2019, 03:42:40 AM »
I don't wear a watch unless going out to something special and id be wearing a tie aswell(gasp),the only watch I own is an old 80s Seiko sports 100 chronograph with what I now know has a classic "7A28"movement inside,i found this watch dead years ago amoungst some rubbish and took a chance and put a new battery in it,it works!ive worn it around to family functions and what not for years, its an attractive old piece and ive since discovered these are quite popular amoung collectors etc,im not looking to sell it I like it too much its a neat looking watch and heavy duty,it aint no rolex and im not really into watches but because I saved it and its a little bit special im quite proud of it!these were the first quartz with analogue movement and super reliable, not wrong there!

That is a neat piece Dave...I have not used a watch since I got a "real" job.  I found looking at my watch all the time just seems to make time stand still, unless of course, you are doing something enjoyable, then time flies!

I wonder if they will ever build digital electronics, like cellphones, that last long enough to become collectible?
If it works good, it looks good...

Wow Dave, nice watch and what strange coincidence. After almost 7 years of waiting for my late father's watch to be repaired I finally picked it up from the watch repair shop this morning. Maybe 5 hours ago.

It's a very simple looking automatic (mechanical self wind) that was a gift to my father from his mother for his 40th birthday. It was made around 1970. It's great to have it back.

Cool, dj

To Seans point there are many examples of some early 1970's digital watches that are quite collectible so keep your eyes open out there at yard sales etc..  ;)  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1978-PULSAR-LED-Calculator-Digital-Watch-w-Boxes-stylus/192782993963?hash=item2ce2c30a2b:g:bj8AAOSw~KNcIiRs
To Darren-  you are a very patient man waiting 7 years to get that watch fixed   ;D
Cell phones I would guess have  not helped watch sales much and have made them more of a fashion statement probably.

I've got a Seiko automatic that looks similar, just a simple straight forward watch. An older brother of mine had bought it for my dad when my brother was stationed in Japan during the Viet Nam war. My dad wore it for years until he finally gave it to me.

I LOVE THE SPACEVIEW!  I got one as a gift from my bride as a wedding gift back in 1974.  I still have it and it still works.  Long gone is the leather band, but I saw the first one that my high school metal shop teacher had.  I always store it with the battery removed.  Maybe someday I'll pass it on to one of my kids.  I'm retired now and it'll be in the will.

I still have a pocket watch that I bought from the town jeweler back in 1965.  I was a cheap watch, and it doesn't keep real good time, but I still have it! :)

Yea, it took some time. The watch maker (a Swiss watch maker) couldn't find a replacement part until he was back in Switzerland and bought out an old watchmakers supplies. At one time he told me "it's a very complicated mechanism" to which I replied "yes, it's a swiss watch".

Anyway, love the look of the Spaceview, dj

When digital watches first came out in the '70s, they were fairly expensive, but within a couple of months the prices dropped dramatically, leaving retailers with watches that cost them 4 times what they could sell them for. The same thing happened with pocket calculators; one of my college electronics instructors had an early HP model, while all of us students could only afford slide rules, not $450 calculators. Within 2 or 3 years, calculators were cheap enough for even starving students to afford. ;D
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Here’s my dad’s watch inherited after he died in 91. I love this watch and I only wear it when I dress up, I’ll pass it on to my son, while I’m alive!

Thanks....that's ok, I was 18, and it seems like it was a long time ago.
I'll pass it on to one of the grandkids someday.

No $h^t!!

Seven of them were trapped on the inside of the fire for a couple of days and kept moving deeper till the air ran out.

They were in another section away from the actual blast, so they probably didn't know what happened.

Imagine if one of them had an apple watch with a recording app!

Some genius in management decided to tram a piece of equipment thru an opening that was shorter than the machine and it contacted the overhead power lines. Turned out that fact was previously reported, but the order was given to try it anyway!

I have this pocket watch that was passed down from my father who received it from my Grandad (mother’s father).

My Grandad worked in a pawn jewellers so I believe it was originally brought into his shop.

The face lists a Liverpool UK jeweller/watch company and attached to the chain is a 1912 Gold Sovereign coin.  The movement is from American Watch Company, Waltham, Mass.

Great idea Dave but if I had one of those, I’d have no excuse with the wife for coming home late .
