Transmission Bearing Seating
« on: March 22, 2019, 10:37:09 AM »
1975 Honda CB750K. I’m a little concerned if I was able to get the transmission bearing to seat properly on the main shaft that sits at the edge of the case. Can you guys take a look at the attached video (the videos only 7 seconds long). Does the gear next to it have to much play?

I was following along with the wrench and spanner transmission bearing article and he suggested freezing the main shaft and tapping the bearing on with a socket. I heated the bearing on the opposite end. But didn’t with this bearing, because the article said it wasn’t necessary.

I don’t think the video upload worked. So, here’s a YouTube link:

I know that there are clips that hold the bearing in place in the case, so maybe it fine?

All of my new bearings slipped on. Not one of them was pressed on.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Are you saying I didn’t align the bearing well enough? I got the bearing 1/2 of the way by hand. So I think it’s good. But maybe not. What do I do from here?

I put the main shaft in the upper half of the case to see where the clips line up. And they look like they line up perfectly. Seems like if the bearing slid on more that they wouldn’t line up right. So maybe the bearing is seated?

Is that bearing #5 in the exploded trans diagram? The inner race should be against the "shelf" of the spline end. Is there a thrust washer between the bearing and gear #4?

This is bearing 23 on the diagram. Part no. 91003-235-000. It’s the last bearing on the main shaft that sits on the edge of the case and is oiled by the countershaft bearing retainer. I did check to make sure the thrust washer between gears 5 and 2 is there and it is.

I believe that the washer labeled 17 part no. 90458-292-000 is in place as well. It was in a numbered ziplock bag that I have a photo of. And the bag and part are gone, which should mean it’s installed, but you can’t visually see the part.

Order of the gears is F, 1,4,3,2,5 for reference.

Oh and I forgot to mention the reason for the tight fit is this is a race bearing that is ceramic coated from CycleX.

I have the coated bearings from Cycle X as well and all of mine were slip fit and all dropped in perfectly. You need to make sure its not pushed on slightly crooked and that there are no burrs on the shaft or bearing ID.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Is it ok to pull the bearing and put it back on?

I just replaced all the transmission bearings as well, and this particular bearing didn't drop in either. I had to heat it, then use the old bearing and some hits with the hammer to get it on.

From what I can see, the bearing is properly seated. No need to remove it. Like you said, if it was too far out, the retaining clips wouldn't fit into the case. ;)

Thanks Scottly! Seems to be the expert consensus.

FYI, for anyone who’s reading through the thread. Called a bearing shop that said not to re-use pulled bearings unless you had a bearing puller that pulls from the inner races. My cheaper bearing puller pulls on the outer races.
