So I managed to lose the key for my 85 CB700SC during the move from Ca to AZ. I kept hoping it would turn up and it probably will one day. But, I need to run the bike. I decided to just take the ignition lock to the locksmith and have a new one made. That part of the odyssey is pending. But c r a p taking this one out is far more a pain than on the older CBs. And, I'm worried. The older locks have a number stamped on them. Not this one. Hope it won't be an issue. But my luck?

Anyone have a better experience?

I've had better luck getting keys made from seat locks and helmet locks. It seems they almost always have key numbers on them even when the ignition doesn't.

I got lucky and actually got 2 NOS keys that fit from my local big box dealer for my 1975 Kaw 900 Z1B when I bought it around 4 ago. They have been in business a long time. The guy said I should buy a lottery ticket on the way home

My local mom and pop shop bought all of the keys from the old Dealership. I'm always getting keys there but nothing newer than the sohc750's. I even got a sandcast key with the plastic ring on it. She said $5, I gave her a $20.

I lost one and had the numbers punched off of the lock.........it took the locksmith about the same amount of time to climb in the back of my truck as it did to make the key. If the seat lock is easier to remove I would go that way.

The seat lock had welded nuts to frame on the back and break off head bolts installed so there is no wrench head to apply torque. I suppose they could be drilled out. I guess Honda was trying to deter theft. Took about an hour of front end dismantling. But I have the ignition switch ready to go to the locksmith. Can't find numbers on the seat lock either. Hope the locksmith has blanks. Heh, the 85 is the newest bike I have.

Take the vin for the bike with you in case they went to a scheme of vin related keys like cars...

I feel your pain when it comes to keys. I've lost my fair share over the years.

My brother lost the keys for his 76 gl1000. After trying everything else I tried the key from my 79, it started right up. I made him get copies and give mine back. A couple years later he lost all of them again, he came over and asked but I sold that bike with both keys and got a 78. lol the key to that bike didn't fit.

Just to practice story telling...

I called the local Honda dealer. Tried to sell me a whole ignition lock assembly. Er, won't the seat lock be wrong? Ummm, yeah. After flip flopping about whether or not they could even get a key. They finally said yes it was available to be ordered. Won't you need the MC VIN number? Nah, just take the blank to a locksmith. .....ooookaaay. Thanks anyway.

Fortunately, I had already called a locksmith, who didn't think finding a blank would be much issue, within his locksmith community. We'll see. The lock goes to him next monday. When he will "fiddle with it for awhile and cut a key for it".

He's done well for me in the past. So, with hope...

For Red I had a lock and no key, took it apart and cut a key by pins, it is a pita, but doable. As far as I remember, I used regular HD key blank. Car/motorcycle locks do not have very tight tolerances.

Similar. But physically longer, different connector, and black.

I've tried my entire collection of keys in it. ...except the one that is misplaced.

So, I may have actually found the key. With some fiddling, it operates the lock. I took both to the locksmith today as the key is visibly worn. His apprentice made a new key, which sticks and is as fiddly as the worn key. Was not pleased. So, had to leave the lock there for another day for the "master" to work his magic.

At least I have hope I can put it back together and ride the bike again.

Closure! Lock now has 4 keys that work! Started and ran about the property here. Has a duff slow jet in one carb. Needs a bit of choke/enrichment to power off idle under load. Can hear at least one cylinder not make power until RPMs climb, unless some choke applied.

Probably should take it apart. Don't want to. Carbs pretty embedded. Wondering about the effectiveness of fuel additive cleaners.

Any recommendations? Success stories?

Hi.I have had good luck with the injector/carb cleaner that is made for adding to fuel tank.I had 3 injectors plugged in a 4.6 lit. Ford that eventually cleared after a fair bit of cleaner added to tank.Worth a try.

The old key turned up the day before I took the lock in to the locksmith. It worked so poorly, I thought it was the wrong key. However, if you tweak it just right it will open the lock. The locksmith said it was very worn, both lock and key. He made a key with a bit more "beef", and it works pretty well now. But, he warned me that the ignition lock was very worn inside.

The bike has 73000 miles on it. Something has to get worn, right?

Nice Nighthawk S, had an 84 that I graduated to from a CX650 which was a first bike.

I have had very good luck with Sierra Carbon Free. It comes in an aerosol can and a bottle you can dump into your gas tank.
