1977 CB 750K - Clutch Adjustment
« on: March 25, 2019, 02:39:57 PM »
Hi all,

I am in the last steps of a rebuild of a 1977 CB750k and after getting it on the road for a few short trips, when I noticed it idled very high when I was stopped with the clutch handle pulled all the way in and at one intersection, waiting for the light to change, the bike was pulling forward with the clutch disengaged and then stalled.

I thought the issue might be old clutch plates, which I've read can have trouble with modern oil so I ordered a new set (this repair kit https://www.cb750supply.com/products/4/engine/38/clutch-plates-springs-cables was what I ordered). Installed it, added 15W-40 and put everything back together.  At first the lifter adjusting screw was too tight and I could not get the clutch to engage at all (stayed out of gear), but when I loosened it, tightened to tension and then backed off 1/4 turn, it worked much better. I was able to head around the block shifting up and down. When I came to a stop in my driveway, killed the engine and then tried shifting with the engine off, it would not shift into neutral or into any other gear.

Any thoughts?

have you tried rolling the bike with the engine off then finding the gear you want?

Thanks. I have tried that in the past (and it worked as I recall), but hoping to get to the root cause so I don't need to unstick the clutch that way each ride.
