I'd be interested in an alternative to the 400F clip as well so I don't have to pay $30 for one on ebay.

For the 500 go to UK site a member there was making them. For the 400 i think you are stuck with the expensive ones

I am missing the clip on my 550 - so far the air filter has stayed in place.  would be nice to have the clip but I would not worry to much about not having it

On the 400 the air filter "leans back" from the airbox opening if you don't have the spring.

for the 500/550 I just made a wedge shaped rubber strip that fits in that slot,too easy.

Someone else said they used clothes pins - I'm guessing there's a variety of inexpensive home-made alternatives...

If the steel spring that fixates the filter element is not available, you can make one yourself. I have seen that steel used in packaging, to keep cargo together like on on pallets. I was lucky to find some of those steel strips just lying around in the streets. You can also use it for homemade piston ring compressors.

Good idea - that stuff shows up at my work regularly... keeping cargo together on pallets...

the filter body itself also has a sort of spring bar to it,just wedge anything that's gonna hold it all square and not let the filter vibrate out of position,i chose rubber as its a bit springy and I made it fit that slot so it cant slip out,that steel band you find on brick packs aint springy at all its too soft cheap disposable steel.

Just having a bit of fun...  yeah, it folds, but it still has some springback to it and could possibly be made to work, especially if Deltarider has already done it - although he didn't explicitly state that in his post.

Anyway, it's off the subject, but jakec, here in the USA Dave Silver offers clips for the 400 for just $11.  Shipping will bump it up to closer to $20, but if you're ordering from them anyway...
