NGK D8EA Spark Plugs
« on: March 30, 2019, 12:37:33 pm »
Recently had a bad experience with a new box of NGK spark plugs. Took me a while to catch on too! 4 new plugs, bike ran fine (cb750K1). Next ride, slow to start and a cold pipe. Checked the plug and it sparked fine, when laid on the cam cover and cranked. Suddenly, bike ran OK. Next time, plug would not even fire on the cam cover. Less than 200 miles, completely duff plug. Replaced it, problem solved.

Same batch of plugs (box of 10), in my K4, one completely refused to fire. Nothing. Replaced, problem solved. That’s a 20% failure rate....... anyone else?

There has been discussion on the UK site about counterfeight NGK plugs about, do you think this is what you have? Were they bought from a reputable source?

Dropped box maybe? The box comes 2 rows hi, could have been dropped somewhere along the line.

I had that in a box of motorcraft plugs for my pick up truck.  They are only 1 row high in the box, so it was only 1 bod plug.

Sorry, no photos, tossed them in frustration. They actually looked fine. The first one I spotted fired a few times when grounded on the cam cover and then simply stopped. All 4 plugs were out. At first I suspected the wire or end cap. No issues there. Plugged in a new plug, big fat spark! RE-Checked the original several times, nothing........ weird! NGKs are still my “go to” plug, but when I have a problem, they  get tested.  Assume nothing.

As I said earlier, they came from a major Canadian NGK outlet. Not fakes.

I hope there is no bad batch of NGK plugs  I have around 3 boxes of 10  in stock for MY use! :)
Strange, they quit without fouling like internal  disruption.

It not good to hear you had new NGK plug failure. However I had an interesting first with NGK plug. The porcelain tip split off and slid down the fine wire and stopped on the ground electrode snuffing the spark and go instantly. The plug was NGK BR10EG in Honda CR85R running a touch lean on a cold day. Not the same as old 750's but I've never seen a NGK failure like this. Old Champion N3g yes, but never a NGK.

It happens, I rebuilt an 80 Honda CBX engine, I take special care in carb cleaning and settings. The bike fired up and idled fine. Put about 250 break in miles on it and was having some issues that mimic some familiar carb issues, Crap!  I pulled and went through those carbs three times before I realized it wasn't the carbs. My old fuzzy synapse fired correctly for a microsecond and I remembered having the very issue many years ago and it was a spark plug. The trouble was identifying which plug it was as the damn thing was intermittent. I replaced them all and that cured the problem. I bought the plugs from a reputable dealer but never gave a thought to the possibility of counterfeit plugs.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the correct step to take.
