WHAT COLOR/FINISH SHOULD I GO WITH ON MY CB750 ?
« on: January 25, 2007, 08:41:16 AM »
Here we go again right ?  ::) ;D

The time is near to get the CB750 outta storage and start the 2007 Re-do, which includes ditching the Line-X'ed tank and going with a new paintjob. The original idea was to go with a pro plain gloss black paintjob and call it a day, but now I am not so sure. I feel as if I paint it gloss black I am then gonna worry about scratching the paint, and it might take away from the streetfighter / hooligan look the bike has going on. Maybe I should keep the Line-X'ed tank, and do the sidecovers and h.lite bucket to match (for more of a overall look than just the tank) ?

So my choices are Low-Gloss black rattle can - semi-gloss rattle can - the above mentioned pro shot glos sblack paint - or I keep the Line-X'ed tank and do the sidecovers and headlite bucket to match..

The scoot with the Line-X'ed tank:

The Bike with a low-gloss rattlecan paintjob on it:

The bike with more of semi-gloss rattlecan job on it (Kinda looks like Gloss - but it is more semi):

What you guys think I should do ?

Believe me the exhaust will be addressed this spring, with a host of other things.
I am either gonna cut/weld it so it fits closer to the bike with a upward slope, or just cut the can
off completely.

I am not feeling the gloss black paint, as now I don't have to worry about scratching it / rock chips / etc...
Another worry I have with going 4 a gloss black paintjob is that if I go that route, it is gonna make everything else on the bike look bad, because the paint will be so good. If I go rattlecan I can get away with allot more  ;D

Keep the opinions comming.... ;)

My CB750 is done with gloss black and clearcoat. I'll get a nice pic for you.

I'm repainting it a stock color this spring. I'm opting for candy antares red.

Well, The votes thus far are leaning towards gloss black (as I knew they would)..
I kinda wanna keep the Line-X and do some more of the bike to make it flow alittle better, but I doubt I will becasue of the Weight of the stuff (Line-X is heavy as hell).

At the momment the winner is Gloss black, but we shall see...

Hey I would say to try and make it blend in with the seats gloss level. Make it look like the tank is flowing into the seat and then do the covers to match.

That's a great idea (just not sure how do-able).
I think my best bet would be to do some experimenting with spraypaints again (as I did last year) and find something I like. This way if fuel gets spilled on it or what not, a fix is just a rattlecan away..

How 'bout a thin strip of that chrome car door edge guard along the bottom seam of the tank?  It would match that chrome trim on your seat and finish off that unsightly seam we all have.

Def. a possibility.
I forget about that strip I have on my seat sometimes... ;D

I think I am gonna go for this finish again come spring --->

That with the new black wheels should look tight...

PT, since you change your mind more often than my wife (  ;) ;D ), why not invest in 2-3 extra tanks. Paint each a different way and you can change them out to suit your mood. Either leave the side covers a flat or semi-gloss black, which would go well with everything, or get extras of those too.

Variety is the spice of life my friends...
And yes , I do change my mind allot (on certain things). ;D

I allready allocated another tank for whatever color I decide to go with, and am keeping the Line-X'ed tank as well if I decide to go back to that look.

I couldnt sleep last night, as one of the things going thru my head was what color
I should paint the 750 ! I keep falling back to Silver, as I think a silver tank and sidecovers
will offset all the black on the bike very well.

So I added a "color" selection to the poll if anyone wants to vote that way..
As always , all input is appreciated... ;D

(sorry for the small pic, but it's all I could find at the moment. It was a special UK paint scheme.)

I say old school... flat black.  Not so sure about rattle can though, but if you can pull it off and make it look good.  Go for it!!!

So far as have a solid tie on Gloss black along with keeping the Line-X..
I am on the fence, thus my reasoning to posting this thread..

Anyone else ?

I would agree with a previous post that silver with black line would look really vintage - take a look at Spartys bike for reference. Or get metal flake silver which would add something more to it. If you look at the photos of the old cafe racers from the late 60`s they mostly have silver tanks (although prob most were unpainted).

I just like the silver for that unique look.

cheers

if an SOHC4 sits in the woods... is only the right side visible?

disagree on the gloss theory making the bike look bad... tell it like it is and just admit you don't want to gloss it.

i just want to see the lineX go away... it's not a truck.  put a good paintjob on it and it shouldn't be hard to keep in good condition.

as many have proven on here... the rattlecan can be very effective.  i say read up... and go that route, gloss black.  it seems you want black anyway.  but, don't just spray it gloss black... go the distance and sand and sand and spray and sand and spray and sand and topcoat and light sand and buff.  (at least)
gloss black rattle can and GLOSS black are not the same.
gloss is not achieved w/ one coat and walk away... it is a process w/ multiple steps and different sprays and of course sanding and buffing.
i'm sure you know this but, i thought it should be said.

I never knew the Line-X was so hated  ;D

I need someone to photoshop a gloss silver (& sidecovers) paintjob on the pic below..
It's not the best pic I have, but it is the only one with the bike in it's current state (black wheels).
Thats the main reason I am thinking about going with a color other than black, becasue now the wheels have added that much more dark to the bike..

Really thinking silver, photoshop anyone ?
Do I do plain straight silver, some sorta pinstripe , etc ??

Has to be the black "wing" pinstripe shown earlier - the UK paint scheme - that is classic 60s  8)

I will see if I can do a mock up. Will take a while. Midterms!

I think you are overlooking some of the great finishes offered by the DAISYROCK guitar company! There is this fuchia burst speckle paint theme thing that would really make it pop. But only if you are comfortable in your manhood, and dont mind being seen.

Also hit the paint section of you local BigLots or Freds and buy what they have the most of!
