1972 CB 750 tank stripes
« on: April 03, 2019, 01:53:42 PM »
Some time ago, I bought tank stripe decals for my Candy Gold1972 CB750 K2 tank restoration. I can't recall the source. When my painter installed the stripes, they were black only, without a white stripe between the black lines. I have looked at several images of 1972 Candy Gold tanks. Some have the white between the black stripes and some do not. Which version is correct? Did they come both ways?

Check Yamiyas tanks. K2 has white between, earlier not.
K2: http://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=246_157_271_242&products_id=2651
K1, K0: http://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=246_157_270_167&products_id=1838

What I have found out about doing the paint and stickers by myself....
Real PITA to apply sticker on tank. I understand why some prefer to paint the stripes. The sticker must be warm enough so it can be massaged to follow the curved tank. Do not handle sticker too hard or early with a plastic card pressing out bubbles of water. Risk to get wrinkles close to the edge. Better to use a needle and puncture the  most difficult bubbles of water and take the small dot mark.

When sticker has fastened, do not try to lift it, it will get striped marks.
I had to redo my K2 stripes, still not perfect but good enough for not very close critical inspection. The bad spots will be magnified  by the thickness of clear. This is what I saw on my tank.

Buy a new tank from Yamiya is not that expensive when thinking about the hard work to do an old tank. Or if you know a pro painter doing it all.
Removal of old paint and ev bondo. Sand it , new 2k bondo on all small dents that will multiply after first layers of primer and sanding it again ;)
Maybe more primer, sanding more.
Now the 2 stage stage rocket with metallic base coat in enough layers for an even result without flames. Wait 15 minutes between each layer. When final layer is done waith 30 minites and do the 2k clear with 15 minutes between.
Candy means 3 stage I guess without too long between. Metallic cannot be sanded.
Let this cure for a week, sand it again.2K clear is very hard and the 800 grit is not enough remove eventual arange peel. Go for 400.... finalize with 800.
Dry tank and remove all dust.
Time for stickers that must be applied with water under so they will not stick direct. You must have wet fingers, wet the all the time when working, if not your skin will get stucked under sticker that you might have cut out from the sticker sheet. Scissor work fine and cut very close to the paint with min clear sticker left. That clear sticker will be applied on a sanded clear and will not be as good as the clear coat beside plu ev skin will be visible too.
Let sticker dry for min 1 week and clear averything again. Thin dusty layers to start with on vinyl stikcers. Then let it get clear. Metallic look better with more. Maybe exactly not how Honda did.

EDIT: New tank from Yamiya has ZERO rust inside to be removed!!  8)

Interesting.

K2 has (on candy gold tank) from inside out: black silver black (last silver and white line aproxx. 3mm.
Yes. It is als available in black white black.
K1 has black candy gold black

Don't use stickers older than 6 months.
The older a sticker (decal) gets the more difficult it will be to apply.
Either the sticker won't stick as good as it should anymore leaving air underneath
or the sticker sticks to well. In that case placing the sticker correctly is almost impossible.

Don't use needles to puncture the sticker to release water.
With a fresh sticker this is not necessary.
Puncturing a sticker will always show. (Ugly).

If you spray a tank it is NOT necessary to put a clear coat between the base (metallic) layer and the candy.

Use stickers with a transfer. In that case you don't need wet fingers. Makes working with stickers much easier.
Correct stickers don't need to be cut with scissors. The moment you need to cut out stickers with scissors you have the wrong stickers.
Don't use wrong stickers.

These are stickers from my stickerman (Europe)
He uses 3M stickers which allow a lot of adjusting in the sticker itself...

I have a Candy Gold K2 with original paint tank. The stripes on my tank are black/silver. You have to look closely but you can see that the stripes and the white lettering in the tank badge are different colors in the photo.
