Bike not accelerating in higher gears
« on: March 31, 2019, 08:30:29 AM »
The last two times I was riding the motorcycle (76 550) the bike was fine until lil later in the ride.  Probably 10 minutes later it would want to die out at stops...I had to really keep on the gas to keep it from dieing. Then going back home I was in 3rd gear, and I could feel it not wanting to go faster. It was probably a mid speed 3rd gear is app I could get out of it. It didn't want to go to the top of the 3rd gear. It was like stuck at that speed and not going faster. I knew it was gonna die soon... Came to stop around the house .. and turned in corner and the bike just shut off.  Last ride also last season it was acting funny as well. I was in a top 4th gear and I could tell it wasn't feeling like it had that GO in the throttle. Like it wanted to slow down and I had the throttle maxed. I don't know what is causing this. Would anyone have any ideas why it's being like that?

I guess I'm just nervous cause I want to take it out again soon but don't wanna be stuck on side of the road. Would like to see if anyone has some trouble shoot tips to check on the bike. Would spark plugs be a possibility? I'm sorry I have no clue just tossing things out there. It was cold day and the battery was slightly low. But it did start right away. Maybe the battery was weak? Would a low battery do that???

Check the fuel tank gas level, see if it runs better with reserve selected.

Always do the complete tune-up check list when performance issues arise.  Points *can* burn and/or slip adjustment.

Take a look at the spark plug deposits.  Carbon fouling makes spark erratic.

But, I would probably check the battery voltage, because ignition becomes unreliable as voltage falls.

I've purchased new battery. Full gas tank. It fired up perfect. Ran around hard on it for 20 minutes. It then started to do it again...it starts to not want to keep running. Like at the stop I'm having to really rev it up to keep it going otherwise it will take a #$%*. My friend said stater or ignition coil. How would I know it's bad from looking at it? Also the spark plugs...how do you take out the plugs in the middle cavity of the 550??? What tool do you use to get deep inside there?  Any help would be greatful.

Check your new battery voltage.  If it isn't being charged, you have a charging issue.  And low voltage affects spark.  Unlikely to be stator, unless attacked with axe, 44 mag, or asphalt impact.

The plugs are easily removed with the stock spark plug socket from the supplied tool kit.  Honda sells them if you lost it.  They have reduced upper diameter to clear the features in the 550 plug well.

Sooty plugs can fail to fire.  Which would be a fuel delivery issue.  Also possibly a gas cap venting issue, causing fuel starvation.

State the modifications for your bike which make it different than stock.
