The colors of the 1977 hondamatic
« on: April 06, 2019, 05:03:05 AM »
A greeting
I need to understand what the original color of my CB750a hondamatic was in 1977. In that year the colors were only two, one red and one blue. My red code? Candy presto red or Glory Brow Metallic? or other?
Thanks to those who know more than me.

I don't think there is a way to tell with the VIN.  Tank/side covers repainted?  You could check the backsides.

Hi lafindufondu, the bike, I think it was painted other times, I found signs of blue and others of red brown.
To bring it back to its original state, you would need the color code as it was born. I prefer red but I don't know its code .... Help

Hello
I wanted to be sure that the 1977 coloring was Candy Presto Red, are there any other confirmations? ;) ;) ;)

Necropost to this... but has anyone found something very similar as a tricoat from PPG, DuPont or BASF product lines?  When I was still doing paint work I had guys come out with a camera from PPG on a spot that was still good on the sidecovers and they couldn't come up with anything.  However, they did have some decent stuff in their "Vibrance" collection as legitimate tricoats which may be decent.

I see only one place that still has this paint for sale online, and to buy the base and midcoat its easily $300 which will probably have enough leftover to allow me to paint 5 bikes!

EDIT: See http://us.vibrancecollection.com/Colors.aspx -- Specifically I think the "obsession" tricoat in the Crystallance Glass Flake Colours set looks like it could be close enough.  Won't win an award, but would look better than the totally sunfaded mess I have.  I remember when I priced this out, at my price direct it was about $120 and it was enough to paint it a couple of times.

Oh yes, that does look pretty good!  What did it cost in materials for you?  Did you paint it?

Colour looks great.  I am just curious how much did it cost you for the paint materials (for the paint, not sandpaper, primer, sealer and clear) and if you sprayed it yourself?

That is still the factory paint, I have not painted mine, luckily my bike must have been kept under cover in the back of a shed  8) (California BTW, now OZ)...

Oh okay.  Gotcha.  I'll have to get a sprayout and compare it then when I'm ready to give it a try. :)
