Remove the gear change mechanism and the two screw/bolts that retain the bearing behind the gear. No need to remove that gear from the primary shaft, shaft with gear and bearing behind all come out together, The internal thread is 12mm I think. Use a long bolt and use as a slide hammer to remove the entire shaft. You had better remove the sump to see what you are removing.

Perfect, thank you! Better to ask than start hitting/pulling stuff with merry abandon...tackling the top end and then pulling the bottom end out of the cases...everything is looking great, hopefully inspection and plastigage, clean and reinstall.

Thus far, head and cylinders seem to be in great condition, passing the non-scientific thumbnail test and general look-over for gross signs of damage...usual carbon and such on the crowns and valves, but the camshaft lobes/head surfaces, cylinder walls and pistons look good, with (hopefully) a clean up, valve lapping, hone and re-ring in order...

Need to clean the piston crowns...carbon deposits are probably per normal, and want to do this as gently as possible. I have used oven cleaner for oily dirt/deposits on cases and haven't experienced any pitting or damage on softer surfaces....was also thinking about an acetone bath followed by ultrasonic with Simple Green?? Thoughts??
