K6 tank liner

So, I'm restoring a k6, and I've got a rusty tank that has had varnish in it for years. After I clean all the rust out, is RED-KOTE the best option? Or do you know of something better? Thanks in advance.

I have no experience with red-kote, but caswell's epoxy sealer is a very good product.

Caswell has worked VERY well for me. I have a K7 II restored 8-10 years ago. It actually had anpin hole leak in a bottom, rear corner where one of the seams had rusted. But the paint original paint was flawless. The chrome strip hid the area (probably part of the problem as it held moisture too).
I followed the instructions to the letter. Then stood the tank up so any “extra” sealer would collect in the corner with the leak........ my son and I are still riding it!

Unless your tank has holes in it I don't see any point at all in coating it. All that does is add a potential fail point if you do the job wrong.
There are many methods for cleaning out a tank, I used the one utilizing The Works toilet bowl cleaner on 2 different tanks and was very happy with the reults. Use the search function to find one of the many threads on this subject.

What Bankerdanny said. See where you stand when you remove the varnish. You might just need a light de-rusting. If it isn't leaking I would avoid sealing the tank.

When I do a restoration I line the tank with the Caswell Kit. A nice paint job on a tank isn’t cheap and since I have no history on the tank it makes sense. Have never had a problem with the Caswell Kit but prep is a huge part of doing the job right.

+1 on Bankerdanny's assessment. Get the rust out with electrolysis and leave it be. If you put goop in it and something goes awry, you'll be looking for a new tank. There's no way to get that #$%* out of there.

Regardless of whether your tank needs a liner or not, don't use Redkote

I am not in favor of lining either and try to avoid it when possible.
But if you need to do an inner coating the most important thing to watch is that there are absolutely no fluids left in the tank.
Often water or cleaner remains in the parts where the tank is pressed welded together for a very long time.
if you coat over fluids the coating will come out again. Often after a longer period.
So let your tank dry in the sun or someplace warm.
Take your time. Let it dry for a week or so.
Inspect with a flash light to be sure the tank is indeed completely dry on the inside.

Clarification...... I NEVER use a tank liner, unless I have to (see my earlier note). Mostly, tank liners fail when the instructions are not followed. Read the instructions and then never skip a step.
