Don't forget the rubber band trick on the rocker shafts to keep from bending a valve on reassembly.

Uhhhh what would the rubber band trick entail? And how would a valve bend anyway?

When you bolt down the cover without having the rocker arms in the cover backed off and retracted away from the valve ends they can side load the valve stem and bind causing it to bend a  valve.
The rubber band trick is taking rubber bands to loop from one rocker end through the adjustment cover hole to the opposite side and the intake or exhaust valve's rocker arm. The rubber bands give as needed for the cam lobes and keep from bending your valves.

Glad someone pointed that out before I got to it. Never heard t
Or read that.
Should I just back all the tappets out? I have to replace one anyway. The bottom was a little chewed so I have a replacement waiting to go in tonight.

Replace it while it is easy to get to and back them all off so you reset them when adjusting your valves.
Not only do valves get bent on reassembly but you can also damage the valve guides without using rubber band trick or ensuring the rocker arms are lining up on the valve ends correctly.

Good luck!

Thank you guys for the catch and the useful tip. Rocker cover is installed and torqued and minus the covers which I have to paint first... THE MOTOR IS ASSEMBLED!!!!!!

I did wish I had a 3rd arm installing the cam. Also, apparently finding rubber bands is a challenge in my town. It took 4 stores to finally find a package. Kind of sad lol

I havemt rushed any of this so far. I've done my best to be extremely methodical and double and or triple check things and I'm using both a Chilton and FSM double checking things
Plus, super sober lol

One question though, factory valve clearance is .003 on the exhaust. In thoughts of hondaman he spoke about issues 650s and late 750s had and suggested to open up the exhaust clearance to .005". Should I do that or stay factory?

I never like the OEM clearances. I would set DOHC Honda's @ .004 to .006 in  .006 to .008 ex. The engines loved it. I'd go .005 no problem. Set the intake looser to....it helps with compression.

I understand Mike to be saying that you should be looser than the factory settings. He says for intake .004”-.006” and for exhaust .006”-.008”.

His wording to me meant he sets DOHC 750s much looser and gave those as examples, then said make the exhaust .005 like hondaman and open the intake.
Maybe I'm wrong. For now I've got it at .003 for the intake (instead of .002) and went to .005 on the exhaust. It's easy enough to adjust if he says different.

Ah yes, I’m most likely wrong. The cam card for my Megacycle 126-20 in my 650 says .004” intake .005” exhaust, for what it’s worth.

So I stayed productive the entire weekend. I'm really happy with the progress I've been making.
Yesterday I got the valves clearance set obviously, but I also got the frame repainted. No more sand through spots or thin spots. It's not as smooth as what my brother did but I think it looks solid and I know it'll be more durable this way. I also painted the top covers with a wrinkle black which I think looks soooooo awesome, plus some other little odds and ends got painted to match the frame. Then greased the fork and swing arm bearings and got the frame to be a "roller" minus the monoshock. Got the SRAD wheel swapped over as well. Ran into a slight issue with the caliper contacting the rotor, which it definitely should not have given how frequent this wheel is swapped onto TL's but nothing a little spacer doesn't solve.
Today I painted the motor with duplicolor cast iron, inspired by cafe racer Fan's motor. Came out really nice. Some imperfections in unseen areas but I'm not concerned in the slightest.

I can't remember. Did you have to mod the swingarm or frame to get it to fit?

The previous, previous owner worked it out but never completed it. Basically the wing arm is perfect for the frame minus the pivot bolt. Width good, wheel alignment is good, all that it has to adapt it is a reducer basically so I can use the 650 pivot bolt. I don't remember how much of an offset sprocket I need though. I have one that was include but I don't think it's quite enough misalignment. I don't remember though. It's been a while and wasn't an obstacle I was planning to tackle yet when I was playing around.

Yeah that wrinkle is pretty cool. I almost want more of it on there but the cast iron color looks great. See that Don?! That’s how nice yours will look if you ever get it into a frame!!! ;)

I would love to incorporate it some more, but on the motor idk if anywhere else would fit nice. I thought about the starter cover but it may look out of place.
The tank cap, and carb top covers will get the wrinkle.

I'm going to go over some of the logos and recessed stuff with black for some accents

So I got the motor into the frame. Screwed up some paint on the motor and frame but I kind of expect it. It's a pain to do by yourself lol
Tossed the seat, tank, and rearsets on and tightened up the clip one so I could see it all together. I'm really happy with it honestly. The back end does look a bit in the air with no weight on it but I'm okay with it. The swing arm angle was what I was focusing on when setting it up
