Can I put GL1000 ignition coils on cb550f
« on: April 08, 2019, 05:49:41 PM »
I am suspecting my coils on cb550f are working randomly. Have a good pair off a GL1000. Was wondering if I can mount them on ?
Thanks

No, not without troubles. The Gl1000 uses a resistive wire system to feed two 3.3 ohm coils. The 550 can't generate enough power to run these coils. You might want to try either the Dyna 5-ohm coils, or the #17-6823 from PartsNmore (which I have on my bike).

Well, of course you can put GL1000 coils on the CB550F.  But then, expect charging issues, because of the extra power draw.  And if you are using points, these will wear out faster.

To make them "workable", install a 1 to 1.5 ohm resistor in series with the power feed to both coils.  Then they won't draw so much power.

The GL only gives the full twelve volts to the coils during E-start operation.  At run time, they operate on about 6 volts...because they switch in a resistor to drop the voltage and keep the coils from overheating.

Actually it's quite simple to do (see pic). But good ceramic ballast resistors aren't cheap...
