NHDRO drag race in Gainesville
« on: April 13, 2019, 04:10:34 am »
We made it safely to Florida for the NHDRO race in Gainesville. Wilbur arrived shortly before we got here. The actual ET part of the program starts bright and early this morning. Wilbur and I will be in street ET and my wife will run her Kawasaki drag bike in pro ET. I've also enter my no bar KZ in street fighter and my dragbike in top gas. Should be a fast paced weekend of racing.

Got beat round two on my best pass of the day. I knew it was a good run so I was sitting up before the 1000’ mark, chopping the throttle before the finish line, and still broke out by .04. I was considering dragging my feet across the finish line...  :o  ;)  ;D

We’ll try again tomorrow!  8)

Had a short day on the Honda. Went out first round to a red light and the bike didn't run the number. Although I came here to race, I really didn't feel into it much today. Perhaps its the heat. Tomorrow is another day. Hope to do better. About to load up the last bike and head for a restaurant to eat and onto the room to get some rest.

Thanks for the report, sometimes when you're not that into it is when it turns around and goes good.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
If you love it, set it free, if it stays it's probably one of my 750's.

Alright, new race day for us but it didn't really end any different than the day before. Both Wilbur and I ended up at the buyback booth for first round. My journey to the walk of shame began with a red light. I did go on to win the buyback round nevertheless. Unfortunately I went on to red light again with a -.003 light in 3 rd that ended my day in street ET.  In street fighter on my old no bar KZ 1000, I left the line with my opponent and ran a side by side pass the entire 1320'. As we crossed the line he had a half a tire out in front and crossed the line first, ending my day in that class. Next up was top gas where I was #4  qualifier. I paied up with an old acquaintance so I knew it was going to be a tough round to win. I did my burnout and as I was rolling up to the tree, the bike started sounding kinda funny. I got to the tree and started to roll on the throttle to activate the two step and the bike gagged a bit but settled down. The tree came down, I released button and the bike left but stumbled and began to run on two cylinders. I immediately pulled to the side of the track and watched my opponent fade out of site, turning on his win light. I knew right away what occurred with the bike without checking. I failed to turn the fuel petcock on when we rolled it out of the trailer this morning. Oh well. Race another day.

S it happens. Learn and race another day. A bad day racing is still better than a good day at work.

You are 100% correct about going racing.

As to learning, no doubt I learned not to break with routine. One of the very first things we do when the bikes come out of the box each morning is to start them up for a few minutes to be certain there are no issues. If all is right with the world, we take the outboard starter cart to the lanes right away so we don't have to rush or bother with getting it there when they make the lane call. This morning the wife asked if I was going to crank the bike up and I told her no, it'll be okay. Now if I hadn't broken my normal process, the gas would have been on already for first round eliminations. Damn, its the racers creed to never deviate and I violated the rule. First and last time for that screw up.

Overall it was a safe weekend for us. That's what's important at the end of the day!!

I've often seen one bike parked in front of a Target store, with a lock on the rear disc and a ribbon from an aircraft that reads "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT". I don't know if he had to learn that the hard way?? Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to hang something off the petcocks as a reminder whenever they are turned off.. Sh t happens, and routines can easily be thrown off. ;)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I was going to try to run my kz1000 at our last Super Comp race but it was popping and running lousy on the way to tech so I decided to keep my focus on our points chase. At the end of the weekend I realized the choke was on.

Overly cautious on my dial for round one Sunday and broke out. Nailed my dial in round two and beat my opponent by .006... but giving him .1 at the line gave him the holeshot win. It was worth the trip (and 42 points!) and I may be more of a regular in Gainesville at some of their NHRA Summit series events.

Race on!  8)
