Is it normal for tappets to sound loose on start up?
« on: April 13, 2019, 02:24:58 PM »
Hey guys quick question if I start the bike up after leaving it overnight sometimes the tablets will sound like they need to be tightened  when I start her up. however once I’m riding for a little bit and get to neutral the bike sounds really good. is this normal due to just heat expansion? Or if one the top it’s making noises when they first start up that means they need to be adjusted?

Thank you.

In that case not unless something is out of spec.

Hmm, this is what it sounds like at neutral.

It sounds like an owl making that owl noise and there’s a steady stream of white smoke out the breather.

Does everything sound okay ?

What's the history of the bike and what oil is in it? Has it had a 3,000 mile tune-up? It might just need a good long ride. What exhaust?

Sounds like a loose cam chain, not tappets. Read up on setting the tension. Chain tensioner is supposed to be handled by a spring, but the plunger gets seized with age. Sometimes it needs a little push, but can easily be damaged in the process.

The owl-ish sound has me confused.

White smoke from the breather was a regular occurrence on all my SOHC bikes at startup and even after short rides. Condensation inside the engine can cause that, creating steam as it heats up. If you can go on a hour long highway ride and it’s still there, it might be something else.

Yeah my cam chain has always been finicky. Last season I believe I pressed too hard on the tensioning system and I was lucky I didn’t screw it up.

I’ve had the white smoke after hours of riding . Always been there idk why but maybe that’s why I’m always coughing after riding and feeling out of it?

Every now and then the bike will burp back fire once or twice  alittle bit on the deceleration but other than that she runs pretty good. I have 10w40 diesel shell In the bike and I take really good care of it. I actually obsess alittle bit sometimes

It sounds like either an uneven idle (carb vacuum balance needed?) or timing is off a bit on one set of points. This can make the tiny Fours smoke because it introduces ring flutter on the pistons with slow timing, letting oil get sucked past the rings on the slow cylinders.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

Hondaman you genius! One of my points is off at neutral! I had a prior post about this that I was able to get all my timing in place however my 1.4 is slightly off at idle but I was told not to worry about it because the bike goes into full ignition after 2000rpm anyway so. But I will fix that ASAP

That makes little sense.
But as long as you're happy, it's OK.
