Gs400?
« on: April 13, 2019, 08:32:43 PM »
Picked up this gs400 complete for 300 today. Its apparently an odd ball and wondering if people can tell me anything. From research it looks like a gs400s but Canada model only? Did some reading and they say they are actually 450's and it was a sports model option offered to dealers.

I actually learned to ride on a GS400.  They were ok bikes....style wise it didn't look anything like what you've got there.

It is indeed a weird model  It kind of looks like what was released as a GSX400....but those specifically had the emblem saying so on the side covers.  Maybe that was a special dealer special that was a precursor to the GSX release.

Curious if you find out more

Apparantly and this is just the word on the streets. The gs400s is a gsx400s just Canadian. From what I have heard parts along on this bike are worth more then what I paid.

I did get it running today briefly without a carb clean and it actually ran really well.

Now the thing is bearings seem good(I was always told, always replace bearings on a used bike... and I do) but do you guys find this necessary if they spin good and have zero wobble? Same goes for the chain im cheap and it moves fine but it's got surface rust and I dont want to crash. Cheaper to do these then buy a new bike. All in all so far I have a running bike for 350$ in.

I figure I'm going to need tires, bearings all around, fork seals and covers  and rebuild the master cylinder and im off to the races.

If there are no indication of issues with Chain or bearings I wouldn't worry too much.  BUT!  the first time you have the wheels off to change tires I would inspect them to see if they appear newly replaced..if not then just change them. Small price for peace of mind.
