exhaust gasket
« on: May 20, 2013, 08:57:59 AM »
Im searching around for a muffler for my 400 but finding that most will not fit with the exhaust gasket installed on the header. With the gasket it measures around 1.9" but most mufflers with reducer kits allow up to 1.75" only .  Can I run a muffler without the gasket? Is there a thinner gasket option??  how do I cut the old gasket off without messing up the header...dremel tool with cutoff wheel??

thanks!!

I think you are talking about the collector area for a 4-1? If so a 2" ID (important part) should be just fine there. Close fit and the fact it is outside not in the pipe will reduce leakage greatly. I hope this helps because I'm not really sure what exactly we are talking about

Yes the collector at the end of the header where the muffler mounts. There is a gasket that measures 1.9" and prevents me from using a majority of aftermarket mufflers. My question was can I remove this and still be ok without it or use a thinner gasket material.

I'm dredging this to the top - I've got a replacement muffler & gasket from david silver spares, and struggling with the best way to remove the old collector gasket - seems to be pretty well fused onto the collector...

If you do get it off they are rarely reusable. It is a tube of grey heat resistant material probably about2 inch long and 1/8 inch thick that slides onto the collector(when new) and the muffler slides over. If we ever ordered new collector or new muffler we always ordered new gasket as well!!

I have a new one ready to go.  Seems like the old one is melted to the collector and it was leaking before, I can chip away pieces of it but it was slow going and thought there had to be a better way.

Take it the header and hit it with a stiff wire wheel or a flap wheel.

This is the offending gasket - I'll give the wire wheel a shot tomorrow

The wire wheel was the trick, it gave me enough of a lip on the edge to get under it with a screwdriver and it broke free once I knocked some of the gasket off.
