CB400F - Clutch Holder Tool
« on: April 17, 2019, 06:03:42 AM »
Searched, didnt find anything.... hoping I can get some advice.  I'm reasembling my CB400f after the primary gear bolt backed out and trashed my clutch cover, and I took off the clutch basket to clean off all of the paper gasket crap.  That done, I need to torque the primary gear & clutch hub nut and I'm looking for the right tool -

DSS sells this tool - https://www.davidsilverspares.com/CB400F-SUPER-SPORT-FOUR/part_236889/ -

which looks like an EBC tool, but EBC sells a number of different versions of this that look the same - https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.A0.H0.Xebc+clutch+holder+honda.TRS1&_nkw=ebc+clutch+holder+honda&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=ebc+clutch+holder  .  Does anyone know what the right one is?  I'd normally just order it from DSS, but dont really want to wait 2 weeks to get it from the UK.

Motion Pro, BikeMaster and Tusk all sell a Clutch holding tool that should work for you.  Search 'GOOGLE" for - motorcycle clutch holding tool - and you will get lots of options.

Yep, options is where my confusion is - which is the right one that fits in a CB clutch center?   Looks like all of those companies sell multiple products.  The ones that have the arms and clamps dont look like a great option compared to the one in the photo above, but EBC sells several different varieties I presume for different clutch baskets.

Try searching Kawasaki clutch holding tool and you should get a picture of molegrips(vicegrips) with long jaws bent at the end to clamp into the grooves in the clutch centre hub.
This is what Kawasaki sent out as an official workshop tool and i found it so good i bought my own 40 years ago and use it regularly on all motorcycles. As i am in UK and on a dumbfone i cant look at the US sites to give you a link
EDIT try 08-008 at motion pro.com

I've seen the vicegrip style and I cant say I'm too excited about that, looks like there's a pretty high probability of user error for me.  I know these things only get 30 ft-lbs but it doesnt look like there's enough to get purchase on the outside of the basket with one of those.

My other option I suppose is to jam a penny in between the clutch drive and primary gear.

Never had to grip the outside basket, only the centre hub. To undo crank or primary nut i put a copper coin in the gear teeth.

A sturdy piece of cloth will do just as well, and won't harm any parts...
