  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
I can't help but wonder if whoever dies with the most unfinished projects wins? If so, I'm a candidate, look what I just found! I was actually trawling thru Face Ache on Easter Sunday morning looking for parts for my new RC51 "Bitsa" build, and I found a listing for a "1969 Honda CB750K2". Hmmnnn, that pretty much told me how much the owner knew, but the bonus was, he lives in my home town! (which might give you an idea of what folks from my home town are like, and why I moved out as soon as I was old enough to join the Army, and never moved back home........... ;D)

Terry's latest CB750 project. by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Not much to look at, but as I've got just about every part Honda ever made for a CB750 somewhere in my overstuffed garage, I made a "Sofa King" low offer, gave him my number, and he called back 5 minutes later to say he'd take my offer. Great! He also told me that he had some of the other parts that were missing, as he bought it as a complete running bike 10 years ago, started to strip it down to do a rebuild, (oooher, I hope that's not an omen?) and nothing came of it. He also said he had a spare engine, in bits at his cousin's house, so I'm hoping that materialises on Saturday when I go to collect it, even if I have to give him a few more bucks to secure it. You can never have too many parts.........

Now I'm sure my American friends will be horrified looking at this unloved hulk leaning against someones shed, knowing as I do that even nowadays, good-ish CB750's can be had for not much in the land of the free. Over here it's a different story, a good running bike with rattle can paint, sh1tty seat, 4-1 pipe etc will set you back around $5K USD, and a really nice original (or restored) one could command 3 or 4 times that. So for $500 Oz ($350 USD) I'm more than happy if the frame is relatively rust free (I'm stoked that all the tabs appear to be in place and it hasn't been cut) and even if the engine is not salvageable, if the cases have the right numbers, I can swap the guts from my "F" engine with it's welded (and weeping) cases into the K2's cases, once they've been de-oxidised. It'd be great if I could use the original head and cylinder block too, but if not, I've got spares.

Anyway, that's where I'm at. Rotten flat tyres, rusted out rims, oxidized engine with no carbs, so probably seized, but hey, I built my current redneck bike from just a bare frame with no swingarm, so anything's possible, if not probable.

If you've been following my other threads you'll know that I have many competing priorities, but I already have some ideas for this bike, so another cheap arse budget build probably, I'm glad I didn't give away my HM341 pipes to my mate Fred a few months ago, I've got a good idea for them too. We'll see...........;D

Great price on the new project.

Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to digging into it, as has been mentioned the twin disc setup reminds me of my first K bike, which I sold thru my cousins shop in my home town, I'd be both stoked and saddened if it was, but who knows? If one owner decided it needed better brakes, I wonder what lurks within those engine cases? Oh well, all will be revealed on the weekend when I go collect it.

Don, there's another "Redneck" thread for my latest RC51 project, I've bought another one that hit (or perhaps I should say, "was hit by") a Kangaroo, so quite badly damaged. I have the engine and rear subframe, swingarm and wheel (all undamaged) frame and front wheel (damaged) and most of the bolt on bits and wiring in various conditions.

I bought CBR929RR front forks and a frame from the US which I'm hoping will arrive today, so I can bolt up everything and maybe even fire it up? My intent is then to just add parts to it as I can afford them, unlike the new CB750 project, where I already have most of the parts I'll need to get it back on the road. More later. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks Don, they sure do, I just wish I had more fenders, they seem to be getting more and more elusive, I have one bashed up white cop rear fender and a chrome one I shortened a few years ago to choose from, so I hope the seller has a nice(ish) one I can put on it? Wait and see, I guess......... ;D

Ha ha, you guys worry too much! I just had a full spinal MRI under sedation so I'm stoned on Diazepam and Tramadol as I type this, but in my current state of mind, I can't see a problem with this build, should be a piece of cake! Ooh look, an elephant! ;D

Ha ha, no mate, I was just seeing some odd things for a little while after sedation this morning, but I'm as good as gold now, and looking forward to the journey to my home town tomorrow to collect the remains of another CB750, something that always excites me, for some reason. We picked up Tim's new Royal Enfield 650 Continental GT and I had an enjoyable (if not slightly nervous) ride home from the bike shop, it's only the third of forth time I've ridden a brand new bike, and it was getting close to Friday afternoon peak hour traffic with dark clouds hovering above, but happily I got it home in one piece, and had a thoroughly enjoyable ride to boot! ;D

Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to doing a couple of hundred kilometers with Tim on Monday, him on his RE and me on my Harley Sportster, it's just a pity that Tim's restricted to riding the smaller bike until he gets his full license before we can swap bikes and do a comparison. No biggie, they're both great bikes to ride. ;D

It will not take long until a project will be started here to make a CB500/550 or a 750 to look like that older looking Royal Enfield.
Maybe your latest barn/yard/swamp find, Terry? ;)

Edit: I could not resist to see if RE is available in Sweden. Yes it is...

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
Thanks Per, and I'm pissed off that Tim has to work tomorrow, so no ride? Damn, it'll have to wait until next weekend now, oh well............

Anyway, back to the latest "Swamp Rat" (Thanks Per) build. I drove the 200 miles to my home town and straight around to Gary's house, to collect the remains of his old 750. I didn't know, (but I suspected) that Gary was an Aboriginal, so when I got to his place, I was confronted by around 20 people sitting around his yard drinking booze, and as i walked up the driveway, I realised that I had become the centre of attention. Oh well, having kissed the "Blarney Stone" in Ireland in 1974, I seem to have a way with hostile crowds, and soon we were all sitting around yakking about motorcycles.

Gary wasn't home at that stage, so someone thrust a can of beer in my hand and engaged me in conversation, and a couple of the guys even took me up to the shed and showed me Gary's other bike, a 2003 "100th Anniversary" Harley softail. That was a bit of a surprise, as most of the local aboriginals are pretty poor, and I've never known one who owns a Harley before, because they're arguably the most expensive bikes you can buy here in Oz, even second hand.

I looked around the shed for other CB750 parts, but sadly there was just a very rusty seat with a rotten foam and ripped, non-original cover, so I left it. That's OK, I've got at least one good seat here. Gary arrived and I explained that I wasn't sure if I'd be able to drag the rotting hulk down his driveway to my trailer, but I needn't have worried, there were plenty of big strong boys who had it on my trailer in minutes without any input from me. Good sh1t! I took a pic of Gary with the bike, and as I left he promised he'd look for the missing bits and let me know, but I'm not fussed, I've got most of the parts I need to build a delightful rat 750, which I'll probably only sell to raise cash for my numerous other build projects.

Terry's Swamp Rat CB750 28 Apr 2019 9 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I towed it around to my Ma's place, and emptied a can of WD40 onto every nut and bolt, I did this with my CB350F back in 1996, and every nut and bolt came out in one piece, and it was pretty much in the same condition as the swamp rat.

Terry's Swamp Rat CB750 28 Apr 2019 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

When I got home I mixed up a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone and tipped some into thee inlet ports, and drenched the spark plugs, which (thankfully) were all in place, and all the nuts and bolts again. The rims are shot, as are the spokes and tyres, I actually had air in the rear tyre until it exploded 5 minutes after I pumped it up to 30 psi, although that might have been my fault, I had the rear end strapped down pretty tightly at the time, so the extra pressure was obviously too much for the perished old rubber. No biggie, I've got a better (not great) front wheel, and a (slightly better) rear rim and spokes that I can lace up. It'll do. Maybe I'll do the "Cafe Racer" thing, and paint it.

OK, so that's about it, once I get the plugs out I'll pour more ATF/Acetone mix down the plug holes and leave it for a few days, and pray to the great pumpkin that the engine will free up, but to be fair, I'm not holding out much hope. We'll see. ;D

That head is a later one. Not K1 as my Brownie.
Blast the rims and paint them (powder?) if OK (no dents or wobbling jumpy) can be the solution if building a good looking rat/café without cutting the rear of the frame off making it impossible for future build closer to stock rear look.

Very interesting info about the PO with friends! That will affect the build?
Information from my brown K2's PO helped me to go brown since bike was brown from the very beginning. I had no idea like that before.

Here some inspiration to be used when working with the CB750 residues aka Swamp Rat

More comments about this beginning of an epic bike build I wrote in the "Lets see your SOHC bike out on the road!"  thread:

Terry, "Swamp Rat" is the perfect name for that bike that bug spray could not kill as it look like! It is a runner according to your photo!
Has it served as a boat anchor the last decade?
Check if you can see bite marks... maybe a huge croc has bitten it when taking it to its nest?  Another explanaton is a beaver family that has used it to hot up their construction making their neighbours green with envy.
If you should have lived in USA, Katrina or Sandy?

Edit: A bucket with Autosol and some elbow grease will make that bike to look like new! ;)

More: Maybe you should check the archives about biker lost in the wilderness around 1975...?

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
Ha ha, Gary and his Aboriginal mates are really nice blokes, but sadly not much has changed with their culture, most don't want to work and would rather drink than eat. (I don't want to work either but the government won't pay me to stay home jntil I'm 67, when I will have worked for 52 years straight)

Gary also has a Harley, which is really unusual, and I'm thjnking of making him a (lowball) offer for it, as even though its parked inside his garage, its looking a tad untidy, and hasn't been ridden in quite awhile? I don't need another Harley, but hey, if the price is right....... Ok, more info from my work I did on it tonight, with pics. News at 11! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

  • Bike almost back to the 70's 2015
It will be interesting to see what lurks inside that valve cover. A good cam that can indicate other bore/pistons.... Ignition cover look good, though...like my K6 has.
About cannibals..They have never existed on that continent, more north...east Indonesia.
Semi cannibal if eating a croc that ate a well marbled juicy biker the week before :) :)

Some groups of people seems to have given up, blaming all setbacks or resistance from other people on racism or hate against their culture.
I'm a normal Swede, hetero and man. I can not blame anything like racism, Homophobia, Islamophobia when people do not agree with me.  Real hate against white working taxpaying people is accepted by the politicians and nothing to complain about. If I do, I'm a fascist, or nazi.

Just bite the bullet and continue forward working until I hopefully can retire.

You do not need to be a cannibal for eating a Danish ;) A sweet and juicy one...mmmm!!
