There was a post about this within the last couple of weeks, I think. I tried and gave up. I've read flat-nosed jewelerly pliers make it easier...

Have you checked out the nice vids from one of our advertisers?

https://www.cb750faces.com/cb750faces.nl/en/content/8-links

His product is great for the DYI'er or full rebuilds.

The other thread has rings from Joker machine, not needed to be pressed, screws. This will make a cafe racer to look cooler.

For my stock looking bike, crimp. I need to make tools for it. Youtube vids did not work for me. I have a K2 set that needs to be assembled. Plus K6 gauges to be serviced inside.

Too hard rings and not thick enough clamp around as support when twisting a screwdriver to bend ring. I need a C- clamp with 2 meeting metal parts woth correct profile to press ring correct. Move the tool one step aside and press together. continue until the rings is done all around. The machined profiled parts might be 1 - 2 cm wide

I made a little bench out of oak with a hole the gauge fits tightly into. The ring sits on the edge and may be crimped with a soft tool and a little hammer.

If you have access to a lathe this might be the way to go -
I am in the process of making a tool based on the design of this - http://www.thisoldtractor.com/moto_guzzi_loopframe_gauge_trim_ring_removal_and_installation.html

Hope this helps inspire ;)

Per
Could you let us have a link to the Joker Machine screw clamp rings? Or a link to the your other thread?

regards
Thomas

It should be possible to find the other thread by scrolling this forum 1-3 weeks back. Or search with google. The latter does not work where I sit now, Shanghai China. Wow, what a nice clean and new town!! (Pudong area) I have changed my mind since last time 2007.

I think the people here is protected against Google's total control collecting data about what people write, think, say and go and which other people that happened to be close with their relations.......

I'll try with Bing..
Found the rings, silver also available

Edit: Found the other thread too with Bing

I use the CB750 Faces rings and just hold my finger on the bent side with a rag and use a small screwdriver to slowly bend the crimp. You should do about 8 starter crimps spread around to start so that the ring stays in place easier while you are crimping.

You can use the chrome covers that have a bolt on ring. I had to repair some K1 stuff to make something work and those held the parts together for a couple seasons of riding. Obviously not original and correct but will clamp the pieces together for a working gauge.

Paint can opener and then file it to make it sharper. Then you also need a big hose clamp to keep the round shape as you turn the lip up. There are a bunch of threads here about it.

I had a heck of a time getting mine started so I made a holder form a piece of scrap steel plate and lightly closed the rings with a drift.  Nowhere near as fancy as the setup with the lathe, but it worked perfectly and you can't see the backside when assembled.  I used a sharpened paint can opener to get them off.
