Amputee Dog Question.
« on: April 27, 2019, 06:32:35 PM »
We have a 9 yr old female black lab that had a front amputation 2.5 weeks ago.
I have concerns about stairs, just the going down part.
Anyone had to deal with this  ?
We have a shoulder harness with handle, will let her down slow with that, but hope to find a way for her to do it alone.
I was thinkingto try to train her to back down. Not sure if it can work.

She'll learn. Shes probably still a little sore. She'll learn all the tricks to get around.
We have a German Shepard that was run over by a car after he bolted after a bunny when he was 1.
Dislocated his rear leg at  hip joint. Vet put back in place but it wouldn't stay. She ended up removing the ball off of leg bone, forming a muscle joint only. He has his own wiggle when walking. After 6 weeks he started using it instead of carrying it. He's 7 now. Hard to tell anything is different when he's running or trotting, but the wiggle when he walks is still their. She'll learn Labs are super smart.
Sorry she has to go through this. Love her extra!

I agree with tracks, she will figure it out. My cattle dog just blew out his right knee a week ago. He just recovered from having his left knee fixed last summer. Now he is figuring out how to do everything the opposite of what he has been doing to get around. In your dog's case it will take a little time for her muscles adapt to the change and for her to learn a new way to walk. I knew a lab that was hit by a car and left with one leg at each end. She learned to run and do just about everything she did before. Dogs seem to be able to adapt to almost anything.

It's good to hear she's a quick learner. Labs are smart, my daughter has two. We rigged a sling for ours around his belly to take him outside. He had a pin and screws, kennel only for 6 weeks. Then swimming every night on and off for 20 minutes.

Just give her lots of ❤️, and take her with you. She still wants to go.

My uncle had a dog named Lucky who lived to a ripe old age after getting hit by a car and losing one of his front legs at the shoulder.  Didn’t even slow him down once he healed up.
