And so it begins, 1977 CB750F2
« on: April 14, 2019, 10:00:19 AM »
Another SOHC project begins. I found this one not far from me lonely in a garage. Parked since 1984, sometimes covered up outside, mostly in a heated garage. Engine is not seized, carbs are stuck, no brakes (or fluid) of course, interior of the gas tank is nasty. I paid too much but I have never seen one around here. At closer inspection "what have I done?".
Day 1, drain the tank, put in some small sharp edged rocks to score the rust and fill with vinegar. The rest of the bike will get a thorough washing.

Ive done the vinegar method with great results but it's a pain in the butt. Flash rusts very quickly so you have to be fast. I let mine soak for 3 days, rinsed, added distilled water baking soda mixture, rinsed, rinsed with acetone then used red cote. I've heard good things about metal rescue but never used myself.

Thanks K7. My plan is top let the vinegar do it's thing, rinse, dry then use POR 15 metal prep and finish with POR 15 sealer. It works well and leaves a nice finish.

Looks like a good bike. Having the original exhaust is a plus. At quick glance, it's only missing the seat rails and correct side cover badges.

I've also done the vinegar with good results.

Nasty gas tank. I think it may need professional help.

Got the carb slides unstuck but the float pins are stuck. Ratz.

Correct sidecover badges for a 1975, 1976, AND 1977. They only changed for the 1978.

Good luck with the tank  :o
