New Project - CB550
« on: May 01, 2019, 09:27:50 AM »
Last night I found a great deal on a 550. The bike has 5,500 miles on the odometer, and is very clean (aside from the customization). It even has the Honda toolkit under the seat. The bike was covered in so much dust that when I got home I had to take a shower. I was sniffing and daydreaming about washing my hands/face the whole 2 hour drive home.

So far this is the third bike like this I've seen. Brown 550's or 500's with very similar details. So I am sure this was part of some kinda kit that you could buy, with different option parts. Earlier this year I was watching one on ebay with only two headlights, different seat, and lowered rear. If anyone knows anything about the history these brown bikes I'd like to hear about it.

I got it home and tested all of the electrical except for electric start. Everything is working well so far. Both brakes were a bit tight and I had to loosen them to be able to roll it around. It is very awkward to move around with the bars. I like the idea of slimmer rabbit ear bars. If anyone has a suggestion for (drilled) bars that would look good and be a little more practical, let me know.

Right now my action plan is to de rust the tank, change oil and then try and start it. If it needs it I'll pull the carbs and clean/rebuild. Then I'd like to doall new front and rear brakes. Finally, I need tires. I think I am just going to get avons because I have them on my 400 and I really like them. I could get a vintage pattern, I suppose. I guess I won't be riding this bike very hard.

One thing that I really do need help with - how to get the wheels off without a center stand? My friend suggested laying the bike over.

I use a Harbor Freight motorcycle jack. You might need to pull the exhaust pipes, but it works well.

Will that work with a wet sump? The oil sump sticks way out of the bottom of the frame on the "baby" fours.

Yes. I used it on my 550.

Sweet. Something like this?

https://www.harborfreight.com/1500-lbs-capacity-atvmotorcycle-lift-60536.html

Where do you touch the bike with the lift? I'm imagining the oil sump sticking down and I don't imagine you would put the jack on those fins.

It's a 74. I am going to keep it as is, maybe some modifications like better exhaust, nicer handlebars. I will start with new brake lines and tires and then just ride it for a while!

I'm currently shopping for a used lift. I realized last night that the upper clamp has the mounting holes that can take those chopper bars that terminate straight into the clamp. At least I think so. So that may be something I can do in the future.

Does anyone have experience with bolt on forward controls on a CB? I've seen these that were welded on (on ebay).

I would throw that in storage and let it be a time capsule but I cant even take my own advice. Thats a nice pick up, are you going to leave the rake and make nice hot rod street bike? i bought an old 750 chopper with a girder and nice rake, love it.

It has already been a time capsule, I'm opening it ;)

I'm not going to change anything drastic. I got a really good price for it (in my opinion), $800. Licensing will run me about $300 and tires $300 as well. Then I will spend about $60-100 on brakes. So I am looking at about $1,500 to be on the road. If I really love riding it then maybe I will put some more time and money into it. The seat is comfortable but I am a little worried about the rake causing the steering to be uncomfortable.

This is one I was watching earlier this year.

If you change pipes you have to find something period correct to replace those. It looks like those might be a little loud. I have not heard how the crossover pipes sound or I can't remember. 8)

I would ideally like to get the stock pipes. But that may be impossible.

Kelly, any chance you want to trade me the gold bodywork off of the 500 you got last month? ;) This brown stuff is in great shape.

Last night I removed the front brake for rebuild. I ordered all new parts for the front brake system including master cylinder from 4into1. I will get a stainless brake line from apex once I measure the length. I also filled the tank with phosphoric acid for de rusting.

I also ordered a center stand from ebay so I can work  on the bike. The exhaust will have to be off to install it, I believe.

Early next week I will remove the carbs and get them in the ultrasonic cleaner. I'm optimistic that with a rebuild and sync, and newly clean tank with new gas, the bike will start up.

Currently debating tire choice but leaning toward the vintage pattern.

I expect there may be some tuning or engine issues with how drastically different the coloring is on your exhaust pipes. Nice to see another set of the X exhaust out there, I personally like it.

Yeah I was worried about the #4 pipe as well. I am going to rebuild the carbs before attempting to start it. I plan to do a little research on jetting with  a 4 into 2. I would hope to eventually get a stock system.

The pipes are off, they’re pretty much rust free, definitely no holes. Very nice condition. And they’re very light. This bike also had exhaust gaskets! First Honda I’ve EVER  worked on that had exhaust gaskets.

Do you think this side stand would conflict with the stock pipes?

Does anyone know what this is? It’s wrapped around the back hub and it looks like leather.

I just looked at some images online and I did not realize that the 550 side stand was already so far forward. Interesting. So I guess I should have no problem mounting up stock pipes.

So far progress has been good. Carbs have been through the ultrasonic cleaner. In general, they were very clean to begin with. However the #3 and #4 carbs we BONE dry due to incorrect float height. I think this should explain blue #4 header and the previous owner's comment that the bike ran "like #$%*."

Carbs are back on, new throttle cable installed, and new oil & genuine Honda filter. I also have new plugs to throw in. Now I just need Gurp's 4into4 exhaust to arrive so I can start it up ;)

Wheels came off last night, taking them to the shop for a tire change today.

Laying in bed last night I decided to draw a little mockup on my phone  8)

After I was done with the 550 for the day I went to box up the chopper exhaust for Gurp. We're trading systems and I'm paying shipping. Seems like a great deal to me.

Another update, I found a great deal on a 360 today, so I can finalyl give my dad his 350 back (after some 2,000 mile maintenance of course). Just in time for summer.
