Mikuni carbs?

While I was working on my 750F this weekend I decided to take a closer look at the carbs that I pulled off of the '78F roller I bought a few months ago to get the front end and brake setup.

I already know that the engine it had in it was a K8 and not an F3, but I thought it had the right carbs. The tops looked like PD. So I was quite surprised to look harder and see that they are Mikunis. They were attached to the engine, so they did fit, but they are definitely not from any SOHC4.

They don't have any numbers on them, just Mikuni on the side. Anyone think they recognize them?

Not sure what mikuni called the il4 models, but those look to have all the functionality of the VM series round slides.

If they are Mikunis from a Yamaha there should be a three digit code from which you'd be able to identify the carbs....Larry

Plus 1!  Sure do look like vm29 smoothies!  Either that or early Kawasaki z1...unless floatbowls have been swapped as those are interchangeable throughout the vm series.  Let me know if you want to sell.  Z1 enterprises used to have an excellent identification guide.  How about pictures of the carb boots...

Oops, yeah i see it now...those carb boots are aftermarket designed to adapt Kawasaki/Suzuki racks to sohc4 750 honda.
If it works good, it looks good...

 Nice find. I hope the rubbers are usable. And I'll be looking closer at the bikes I resell from now on, that could happen again.

This bike had been set up as a drag bike, extended swingarm (and brake caliper rod) and heavy aluminum rears shock eliminator. RC header. It came with never installed Accel coils.

The engine is stuck, but I wonder if it had any internal work done at any point.

I would be tearing into that engine...vm29 are enough carb to feed 1000 plus cc dohcs, not that they can't be made to work on a stock cb750.
If it works good, it looks good...

They are definitely Mikuni carbs, I just was wondering if anyone could tell me what they are from. The consensus seems to be that they are Kawasaki carbs.

Once I finish the work I am doing on my bike I will look harder at these and also the engine they were on to see what other surprises they might be hiding.

Danny, I just looked at my smooth bores and I believe that the small circle inside the square just above the float bowl is the casting identifier for vm29 smoothbores.

Pewe all vm series mikunis have the Mic casting, but only on one side, the other from what Danny posted.

Danny vm29 smooth bores were only sold as aftermarket race carbs, similar to Keihin crs

I found the photos of my VM29's.  The rack is shortened so 1-2 comes closer to 3-4. I had to shorten the Fuel T pipe between 2-3 to make it possible to use stock carb boots.  Used them like this 2014. Replaced by newer Mikuni TMR 32 2015, these easier to jet. Dyno runs with a/f meter a must.

Boots I got with the carbs really sucked in the bad way, way to soft  rubber pulsating at idle and got plenty of cracks before 5000 km. I'm sure they leaked too. I bought another set in the 80's and they were not better so bike got the stock carbs. Still same top speed. Maybe the VM29 had better response at the middle range.

Agreed, they appear to be Smoothbores  [the jets were able to be changed without removing the float bowl]

Interested in them for my spare Z1 motor...
