Longer Oil Filter Housing?
« on: June 01, 2019, 08:18:35 AM »
Seeing some posts on Facebook, the 350 and 650’s oil filter housing and related parts (bolt etc) will work for ours. One member says he uses it on his 550 to ‘increase capacity’.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Picture for reference

I know Honda made the longer bolt for the F model  and a finned spacer that went behind the standard filter housing.
Maybe the one shown is custom, I have certainly not remembered seeing one.

I have a 550F and the bolt is the same as the one to the right. I only looked into it because I saw the 650 manuals call for a spacer between the filter and block

I will admit, I don't know what the 650 used.

350 was short one to best of my knowledge.

350 and 400 use identical filter housings, and the short "bolt".

I'm not sure about this. I think the 400F is longer and there is a spacers in between the spring and and engine. There are definitely two sizes for oil filter housings on these bikes.

I've owned three cb400f's and have never seen one. 75/76/77.

I just checked parts list for 77 400F.Filter housing was in fact changed to a 300 housing.I am  quite certain that 350F and at least 75 400F delivered to Canada came with the longer housing, longer bolt.and spacer fitted to bolt.

OK: the 400 uses the 750 filter housing (-300-) and the 350 uses its own (-333-) ... or apparently one from a CB650Z (?) fits as well (-426-).
The "bolt" (bypass valve assembly) is also different, again the 400 uses the CB750 part and the 350 has its own -333- one.
I don't know what the difference is and I believe I've freely interchanged them, but maybe that's a false memory.
On 350 and 400 bikes side by side I have never seen a difference.

The 75 400F that I production raced must have been a special as it was equipped in crate with 333 housing .333 model code predates 426 by a few years.

I don’t think the additional oil would even significantly affect anything, as the filter element would be the same size. Wonder why the differences though
