'78 550k - front brake binds when turning left
« on: May 22, 2019, 04:23:02 PM »
When rolling the bike around the garage/driveway, if I have the handlebars turned to the left, the front brake will engage. Does anyone know why this might happen?

The caliper has a new piston and seal, fresh fluid, etc. I did not replace the hose or master cylinder, but I wouldn't think that's the problem since it only happens when turing left, right is fine.

Thanks

Check to make sure the axle is firmly secured to the bottom of the fork. The only reason turning the bars would cause brake binding is because it makes wheel get out of parallel with the forks. Also make sure the lower brake hose is properly secured in the bracket.

If you check all your fixed point bolts for the caliper, axel and fork cap nuts, I then would look at the wheel bearings to see if you have one on the way out and allowing the wheel to cock causing the brake to bind.  Let us know when you find the issue.

Thanks all. I loosened all the fork, steering tube, axle, and brake bolts and then rolled it around for a while. This loosened things up, although still not perfectly free.

Then I noticed the front wheel was off center because the axle was installed wrong. Doh! My bad. I assume that will free it up the rest of the way and will correct it tomorrow.
