Sad to read of the passing of a hero from a time when F1 was interesting if dangerous. Apparently he still suffered from the effects of his Nurburgring crash.

Pulled out of that burning car ... being  burnt and inhaling the bad fumes..
 They performed the last rites on him at the hospital as they thought he would not survive..

And he probably would've easily won another drivers championship had it not been for that accident in fact James Hunt who won the championship that year did so just barely even though Lauda had missed so many races recuperating.
