CB550 Frame - Powdercoat - Paint - Plastidip?
« on: May 26, 2019, 12:54:06 PM »
Hey guys I posted earlier this month about my bike being in a house fire. The frame had some rust on it already and so far I've stripped everything off and am still working on getting all the rust off.

It seems like powdercoating is super durable, but I wanted to ask if there are any alternatives that I could do at home for a cheaper price? I don't want it to scratch and start rusting. Are there any paints or bedliner or something like plastidip that could holdup on a motorcycle frame?

Thanks

I pay $300 for a frame, swingarm, both stands, battery box, meter bracket and other brackets at a powdercoater. Considering that includes him sandblasting everything too I think it is money well spent. My color of choice is Mirror Black, damn as close to stock as I can tell.

I am going to try a new brand of paint on the 550. It is Seymour MRO gloss black and is gas and chemical resistant. I have used appliance epoxy and it chips easily. My parts guy says the Seymour MRO is the best single stage paint you can get in a can. We will see but he is usually right.

POR 15 +1
VERY easy to apply, very durable.
Get their top coat in chassis black to give it a uv stable covering.
This is a no brainer home remedy, self leveling, great finish, just the right gloss.

Check Jay Leno's Garage for his POR 15 segment, he uses it a lot.
It works very well.

Don't use plastidip for a frame.   If you want cheap, it's hard to beat good 'ol Rustoleum satin black.   Prep is key.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I have used a frame paint from Harbor Freight that is an almost exact match for the original paint. I have done an entire frame and also touched up others.
