78 750f headlight problem

Anybody ever have their low beam go out, then about 20 short rides later, the high  beam goes from working all the time, to only at idle up to 2000 or so rpm then fades out with a little smoke from the bucket?

Sounds like the "seal" portion of the "sealed beam" has failed, possibly a rock chip punched a hole in the lens? Tungsten filaments burn up when exposed to oxygen.

Why would it still work at idle then fade with revs?  I'm gonna look at the switch and in the bucket once I get a minute.

"Smoke from the bucket" could be a failed bulb or a short in the wiring. Remove the headlight and test with jumper wires to a battery to check the bulb. If the bulb works then I'd say you are looking for a short or failed/melted wires and or connections.

And the winner is; broken 40 year old solder on the ground wire female to the headlight bulb! Must've gotten hot when the low beam went out, as the epoxy is black and powdered near the headlight spade. Also have a few scorch and toasted insulation marks on the back of the headlight where the smoke leaked out of the bare ground wire. :-\
