Unexpected new project (75 XR75)
« on: June 06, 2019, 08:41:26 AM »
Apparently I attract motorcycles that are exactly the same age as me.  Since I have so much time leftover after working on my 750F0 (I really need to get a project thread going for that) it was only fitting that a new project followed me home.

About a year ago, met up with an old friend from college at a car show, started talking about motorcycles.  He mentioned he had an old minibike that he couldn't get running and didn't have room for it in his garage.  It was mentioned if a mutual friend did not pick it up within the year, I could have it the following year.  This weekend, he told me "when you leave the show, swing on by my house"  when I arrived, he wheeled this 75 XR75 out of his barn and helped throw it in the back of my truck.

No spark, and the carb slide is stuck.  Pulled the float bowl, looked surprisingly clean, tossed entire carb into coffee can full of Laquer Thinner.  Slide loosened up after about 15 minutes or so, continued to disassemble an left the parts soaking for a while.

This weekend, I'll try to chase down the spark issue and take some more pics.  I'm sure a points/condenser swap will solve most of the issues.  Unfortunately, without a battery, I don't think a Hondaman ignition will work, so I guess it will stay that way.   8)

Not completely there, but enough to think about a full restore, or just make a runner for the kids.  Probably somewhere in between.

Awesome score!! I wanted one of those since 4th grade (I'm 57 now). I finally got one last month, in a trade.
Mine, too, had no spark. New points, plug,  condenser, and coil, and now it runs like a top. It's surprisingly fast , even with my 180 lbs on it.
I'll never sell it.

That's awesome.  I just picked up a 78 XR75 a couple weekends ago.  I actually bought a Z50 from the guy and he threw in the XR75 cause he was tired of dealing with the folks from craigslist concerning the Z50.  Not sure it has the right carb or throttle cable, something wrong in that department, grandkids will love it.

That was my first bike. I bought it from a neighborhood kid in ‘79 with money from my summer job. Man that brings back a lot of great memories. Good luck with it. I hope it makes great memories for you and your kids.
