Hopefully repair won't cost too much.

It's going to cost about $200, $100 for the debt removal stud gun I bought and about $100 for paint,  clear coat, and supplies.

OK, dents out and a coat of etching primer laid down before I went home last night.

You can see the outline of the filler underneath, but when you run your hand over it everything is smooth.

I'm sorry that happened to you Danny. I will admit I do find a little relief knowing I'm not the only person that could happen to.

I am going to try and get the primer all done today and tomorrow along with a base coat then add the color and clear next week. hopefully all will be done before I am supposed to leave on my 2 week trip on the 23rd. I also need to track down an electrical short that is blowing the main fuse and replace the old front master cylinder I installed as a stop gap. I will be riding through mountains with a fully loaded bike and want fully functional brakes.

   I allowed a parts store guy to sell me some cans of spray bomb cra (p) that lifted and caused all sorts of trouble.

Thanks Don. I need to figure out why the filler under the primer always seems to be visible. Even with the prior paint job there was one spot where I used filler on a shallow dent that was definitely visible when you looked closely. It will have filler in more spots this time and I really don't want it to be visible.

Seems like filler sucks in the paint as it finally cures. Not sure if a primer sealer for the first couple coats would stop this or not. Imagine epoxy primer would.  Guess we will have to pick the brain of a good paint guy to find out the cause. It seems to take a while for it to show up on good paint jobs.


Repaintsupply.com has good prices on Spraymax urethane in a good spraybomb.worth the money for it to laugh off gas spills and probably brake fluid as well.
You have to use proper respirator and cover your skin when spraying urethane, it can be pretty lethal if not respected.

Etching primer is designed to simply cover bare metal and to keep a part from flash-rusting.  May I suggest (as mentioned above) using a polyurethane high-build primer at this stage.  It'll fill in all your sand scratches and low spots, and after block sanding, give you a really good finish to apply your base coat to.  You can get it in a spray can for about 10 bux per can.

Thanks, the etching primer in the photo was just step one over the bare metal, there will be several layers of primer to go, including high build, before I lay down the basecoast. Eastwood Company has a store in the Chicago area, so I can get 2-pack primer from them, they are also my source for spray clear.

Hours of work ruined because I didn't make sure my tank was stable on the table where it was sitting while I did a valve adjustment. The results are below.

I have been a dumbass too, I bought a usable but severely dented tank for my CX500 as the PO put a liner in the tank that came with the bike and it was failing. So, I stripped it and was rewarded with the discovery he had allowed a huge pool of liner setup in the back roof of the tank. I was rewarded with a loose chunk of liner bouncing about in the portion of the tank closest to you when on the bike. Thus the purchase of a beaten up tank.
Well, back to the beaten up tank...I had placed it atop a tall stack of boxes and unevenly loaded stack of things piled on top. Said stack took a tumble as it was on the corner and the tank received a pretty nice dent on top. Shame is if the tank were not dented it would be a perfect tank as inside it looks brand new. The dent in the rear right corner is severe, enough so that the metal is creased inward in a sharp edge on both the outside edge and the deepest part of the dent about a half inch inward.  I had no intention of repairing the tank,merely bought as a usable tank for while I could sort out the original tank's huge chunk of loose liner...

So, I understand the feeling you had when the tank took its tumble.

Last night I did another 90 minutes of sanding and prep finished off with 2 coats of sealer. It is as ready for paint as I have time for. I am busy tonight and most of Saturday then flying to NYC Sunday morning ahead of a couple meetings Monday then flying home late Monday evening. That gives me ~3 days to repaint, sand and buff before Motoblot 6/22 and 6/23 and before leaving for my 2 week road trip on the 23rd or 24th that take me down to NC, SC, TN (including a ride on The Dragon) and back home through Lexington for AMA Vintage MC days July 6-7-8. And in addition to painting I am going to swap out the front master, track down an electrical short and install my bar fairing and Shoie bags. Oh, and work my regular job. Man, I am exhausted just typing all this.

Maybe I will try strip and paint job #3 next Spring, but for now I have lots of riding to do this year and so it is time to get to it.

I did something very very similar. My heart sank. Luckily the dent ended up being smallish but it still makes me feel humble whenever i see it.

You just have to shake it off. I have most of the priming done and should lay down the base coat tonight with color tomorrow and Thursday, clear on Thursday and wet sand and buff Friday.

Basecoat down and color on the side covers (going to solid blue rather than gold centers with blue edges). Some color will go on the tank today along with a midcoat of clear. Then the rest of the color and full clear tomorrow.

I'll add some pictures later tonight.
