Throttle cable recommendations?
« on: June 16, 2019, 09:56:47 PM »
Hi all,
I've recently replaced my throttle cables, but am pretty unhappy with the ones I've purchased. They're markedly stickier than the old stock ones, even after thorough lubrication. I can't stand it- as one of the things that we interact with most on a bike, I feel like throttle feedback should be super pleasant and smooth. Can anyone recommend cables they've been happy with? Bike is a '73 CB 500 four.
Thanks in advance,
-Nick

Sorry but they are one of the few things i always buy genuine and DO NOT LUBE GENUINE ONES as the inner is nylon lined and the outer rubber lined so oil makes them bind up!

This^ and order the right one(s) as Honda has two different types for US (-000) and Euro (-620) style handlebars. I myself never bothered to fit the push cable. It has been in its packaging since the mid 80s.

Before you spend $ on different cables be sure you have the cables routed properly.  Any sharp bends will cause them to be stiff and after you are sure the routing is correct make sure you have them adjusted properly.  If they are too tight they will bind.

Thanks all,
I'm confident that the routing is  correct- just think this was the wrong place to cheap out :/ It's certainly the "pull" cable that's the real hero down there, and that's clearly the one under greater tension/ currently misbehaving. I've ordered a genuine Honda replacement, and will report back.

As an aside, check the throttle tube. I had one that’s previous owner had greased. When it dried up and filled with dirt/dust, it looked OK but was dragging like crazy. Cleaned it out, polished the bar and left it dry and smooth. Made a HUGE difference......
